Thumbs up beagle weeing problem

hi newbie so go easy we have had dogs for a fair few years now but to be honest the others we have had with the exception of our yorkie have been adults we have given a good home to. we have got an 8 month old beagle lovely dog but she won`t wee outside. she will poo and has not done that in the house but for some reason she likes to wee inside. so any advice on what we can try would be great. i am just hoping she is not too set in her ways.

thanks in advance

Phil

Re: beagle weeing problem

Don't have any useful thoughts on your specific problem, but if it's any help I remember my dog trainer telling me very earnestly that you can teach a dog something new no matter how old it was - and we proceeded to do so with my 9yo dog, so with some good advice, I'm sure you will get to sort this out and don't worry too much about habits becoming established....

Re: beagle weeing problem

I would go back to basics just like you would with a little pup. Take her out every 30/45 minutes, If she starts to go give it a name, (This you should eventually be able to use as a toilet cue, and even get her to pee on command) When she finishes praise and lots of treats. Look out for circling, sniffing about scratching at the floor, usually signs they are looking for somewhere to go so get her out quick. They usually need to go after drinking, eating, play and sleeping, so make sure you take her out then too,
If she has an accident, dont tell her off, it can make them nervous about going in front of you, and more likely to sneak off and do it, making it harder to toilet train them. Make sure you clean any accidents up with a special pet accident cleaner, any smell left tends to make them keep going in the same places.

Is she going right through the night? If not I always used to sleep downstairs for the first couple of weeks with my pups, so that when they woke or stirred in the night I used to pop them out then too. If you dont want to do that then you could set an alarm and pop her out that way.

It might be an idea if you havent already to crate train her for her bed, Usually dogs wont soil their beds and the immediate area surrounding it. Its just a training aid though and she will still have to be taken out. If you have never used a crate before, get help how to train her first, as done in the wrong way it wont be a success.

Hope this might help.

Re: beagle weeing problem

great replies thank you. she does seem to be able to go through the night without any problem. i wish she would spin or something she just stands up and goes the little bleeder i will get her off her bottom every half an hour. also i didn`t realise i was doing it but we do use the word association when we let her out so hopefully this will sink in for her. going to get some pet odur remover.

Re: beagle weeing problem

I'm guessing your beagle does wee on walks, so I might add to SDH's very comprehensive post that you could use your word association and treats then too which might speed up the process of weeing on command and outside to boot! Good luck

Re: beagle weeing problem

Our beagle can wee on command I say wee wees every time she went out in the garden and wee'd the second she squatted I said wee wee and good girl and when she had finished I went ott with the praise and treats and she forgives on v quickly.

I agree go right back to basics. See if there is any thing she does just before she goes incase she is giving a little indication. Our beagle would get up and go nose to the ground and bang go so we had to watch her like a hawk and the second that nose went down we let her out praising her when she went out the door so going out meant good things.

Good luck xxx

Re: beagle weeing problem

thanks to everyone who posted. she does let the nose go down so i will be fitter than the dog soon with the amount of times i shot off the sofa yesterday we seemed to manage just 1 last night and it was not so much a wee as a little spot on the floor. i think her previous owners just never bothered to train her which is a shame. looks like we are going to have to work on the re call as well as she does not listen at all. i can feel the 15 mtr lead coming out i had for the springer
cheers phil

Sounds like standard Beagle 'sudden deafness when I get hold of a scent syndrome'......... Having walked with my neighbours Beagles for many years, I can think of many instances of this particular problem!

Re: beagle weeing problem

she seems to be getting there with the wee`ing problem managed to get her to go into her bed through commands as well. she seems to be keen and a good learner so fingers crossed. a little accident this morning when i went into the utility room where her bed is but i can handle and don`t mind so much a night time mishap. going to drag the long lead out this weekend and try her recall. lovely dog and fantastic with the kids and the cats thanks for all the replies

Re: beagle weeing problem

I was most impressed by the uplifting, friendly nature of my friend's Beagles - I think you chose well when you made the decision to take her in, I'm sure her sunny nature will be a great cure for all of life's ills..
