pup and rug
Toilet training is going ok except, we bought new rug at weekend and pup is insisiting on peeing on it.
he is so quick we can be right beside him nad he does it This morning for example, came downstairs, stuck head in kitchen door to make sure there was nothing I could stand on. He had already been out before this to go to toilet and as I opened door to take him out again he ran past me , into living room and peed on rug. I have cleaned it each time, even turned it yesterday and cleaned back in case any smell soaked through and he still does it. He is not usiing puppy pad any more, we still put it down at night but he is not using it. AGHHHHHHHHHH while i was typing this he has just chewed a piece of wallpaper I thought he was chewing on his tow, was corner of the wall !!! |

Re: pup and rug
Absolutely, move that rug away from the living room to somewhere the pup doesn't have access too. He probably associates the rug with going to pee so you can't really win. Keep taking him outside to pee every hour and hopefully he'll get used to that

Re: pup and rug
It depends how you have cleaned it. You need to get rid of the smell the dog can smell that you can't a recipe can be found here How to Clean Dog Urine
I would also get rid of the pad as this is encouraging him to go in the house, I hate these as they can slow toilet training down, IMO the dog learns better without. A puppy can be a massive destructive force, until they have learnt how to behave you have to decide what you are willing to let them destroy, when you have decided this you must remove everything els out of the way, because when you answer the door, load the washer, type a post they will destroy things. My puppies all start with a crate in a pen in the kitchen. They come out of the pen when they have my full attention if the phone rings in the pen you get the idea i am sure. This stage lasts only a very short while. Locking a pup in a crate for hours at a time is cruel, whilst keeping them and you house safe is responsible. Puppies are puppies for a relatively short period and once the manners have been learnt then they can have more access and freedom. Nick |

Re: pup and rug
If you can I would put the rug away for now. Dogs can be weird, it could be because it is new and doesnt smell right. Everytime I have had a new carpet laid, my one whos 13 in April has always done just the one pee on it, every single time as soon as its laid. Dont know how big the rug is, but it could also be that he sees it as a giant puppy pad, if he was using them, Maybe its the texture too. Is it one of those short cut velvety pile ones? A bit like the texture of puppy pads? That could be a factor. Another one could be the backing, certain backings like the woven jute, or even the latex type synthetic ones, have a certain smell about them, maybe thats whats attracting him to do it there.

Re: pup and rug
thanks for replies everyone
The rug is a large one with woven back , Charley did pee on rug in hall when we got him at first but has not after first few days. Going to try another day and if he does it again will put it away. I had forgotten how much work a pup was lol |
