HELP PLEASE! Ozzie is driving us mad.........

I have trained him as far as I can on my own!
He will sit and w8 for his food until i tell him he can eat it, usually only seconds of waiting! On the lead, He will sit by the back gate and let me go through 1st and same on coming back! He will sit at the kerb and w8 to cross the roads! Off lead he will sit and lie down, not for long tho lol..

Basically, when off lead in the back garden, this is when the trouble starts! My poor mom loves her garden and flowers (mainly all headless ones pmsl).
He is really destructive with the garden, not digging but just pulling the heads of the flowers!

Inside if we drop anything it's his in seconds and ripped to shreds! Other than this he has never caused any real damage eg - chewing thru electrical leads or curtains or shoes. I am at my wits end as to how to stop him doing this!

I WILL NOT HIT my boy! I am thinking about the shake bottle like they use on Dog Borstal. Has anyone else tried this method? And does it work for you?

I will be having ozzie done when he is one, which is when my vet suggested! But with regards to taking him training, where i am going to go, she suggested not taking him until hes done as her dogs and others wont tolerate an entire male dog! So i'm stuck till he's one and been done lol.

Any ideas please? Many thanks in advance

Hi
I have never tried the shaker but might be worth a go - i tend to make a loud clap to get OScar's attention if i need to... as for the not going training thats rubbish - OScar is entire and has been going for nearly a year without problems .... even getting him done wont completely 'solve' it unless he is trained so i would say go to a class there are a mix of entire and not entire in ours ... and there are bitches in the class but obviously they just dont come when they are in season

Re: HELP PLEASE! Ozzie is driving us mad.........

The shake bottle is effective and certainly would help him with the leave command...

However, there is a reason why they say don't use it, lol. The shake bottle is a noise deterent, which has its advantages, but the dog really needs to be assessed before anyone uses it. Dogs of a nervous disposition can basically snap around it, through fear biting, if a dog has displayed aggressive tendancies, it can also lead to further aggression, if you were to shake it in front of an aggressive dog, he could turn on you.

It's something I really wouldn't recommend without knowing the dog, but if you are sure that he is a confident enough dog that is neither nervous or aggressive, it could be okay. So caution is very much advised here...

Prepare the bottle by sticking some pebbles in it and the put the lid back on. Keep the bottle out of sight, don't let him see that you have it. Next time something is dropped and when he rushes towards it (timing is essential, you need to catch him when the thought of going for the item enters his mind), drop the bottle a couple of feet next to him and sternly say 'Leave!' just before you drop the bottle. He should literally jump back out of fright from the noise and the Leave command should reinforce it. Walk up to the object and pick it up, along with the bottle. Praising him when he leaves the object alone.

Repeat dropping the item again and sternly say 'Leave!' again and he should back away hoping that the noise doesn't come with it. If he doesn't leave it, then drop the bottle, again, before he has reached the object. It won't take more than two or three times for him to associate that 'Leave!' means he is not allowed to touch the object. If he learns that, then a 'Leave!' command should be enough for him to stop picking at your mum's flowers.

Again, I really can't recommend it as the shake bottle can be risky and it is quite naughty that these shows do include it without delving into much of the reasoning behind why it's not suitable for any owner to use it.

Another idea is a water pistol (a small one, not a Super Soaker Deluxe 5000, lol), which you squirt at the back of his head between the ears. If you have the cash, a squirt collar might even be worth a look, as soon as he rushes towards an object or the flowers, squirt him and he'll quickly learn that any thought of chasing dropped items or flowerheads results in a cheeky bath.

I'm sure dogpositivetraining can cover any ground that I missed out

Best of luck.

I also agree with Rebecca about the training classes, it's bitches in season that disrupt the lessons, not an unclipped male.

So he should be more than welcomed.

Re: HELP PLEASE! Ozzie is driving us mad.........

Hi My lady - I take Lily to puppy classes - she started when she was just over 12 weeks.

For six weeks she learns basic commands (although she knows them already cos she is clever) but mainly it is for socialisation. We also get taught how to care for your dog ie grooming, dental hygiene, checking their paws and ears etc. She will then go on to Junior Classes and so on.

At 9 months she is going to (hopefully) be assessed to be a PAT dog and then maybe some agility - I have high hopes for our Lily!!

As for the gardening Lily is also a budding Alan Titchmarsh. She digs holes. However the children like to help and they all have such fun that I am kind of thinking oh well on a scale of 1 to 10 am I bothered? And really I aint- so holes in the garden we have LOL

As for chewing in the house that is a no no - Lily can only chew her own toys - don't get me wrong she trys - but they get taken away and replaced with her own things.

Have you tried Ozzie with a Kong, something to keep him occupied?

HTH

Re: HELP PLEASE! Ozzie is driving us mad.........

I have used a small shaker with my GSDS , and it worked well, they are not frightened of it and dont snap at it just stops them mainly from jumping at people who visit i only shake it once and a sharp no and they wander off , i was told by my trainer to try it as they are very hyper dogs, now if i shake it they know i mean no and are fine, so maybe it works for some .

Re: HELP PLEASE! Ozzie is driving us mad.........

Thanks for the input so far guys lmao.

I think he is deffo in the destructive teenage era haha. He probably not as bad as i make out hopefully lol .

I did think what that trainer said was a load of B******** so am looking for somwhere else! He gets plenty of socialising (more than me actually!) He see's my brothers dog, and most of my nieghbours have dogs, and yes he is getting sligthly better wiv em!

As for wearing him out I dont think I eva will he is like a bottle of pop hehe.

I will try the shake bottle, cos he has nerves of steel and selective hearing my boy does lol.

But will listen out for any more handy tips!

And mrs D I'm gonna try agillity wiv oz when he's older! And as for a PAT dog i'm sure lilly will be a little star, but if oz went in for that i think the wards wud be pretty empty lmao

Re: HELP PLEASE! Ozzie is driving us mad.........

To be honest, a Trainer should be more than capable of dealing with an unclipped dog. If they can't, I'd really question their ability. It's bitches in heat that no dog trainer can deal with, lol, no amount of recall, rattle bottles or leave commands will stop a dog from running to a bitch in season

Let us know how it goes Wicca, as soon as he is 18 months, he should be fine for agility. Need to wait for him to stop growing first, lol!
