Behaviour update

I got my books and On Talking Terms with Dogs was fantastic! I love that book. One of the signals mentioned was lying down before an approaching dog, that's something Biscuit often does although she says it's used by high ranking dogs and I don't know that a nearly 9mth old dog could be high ranking! Or even consider itself high ranking. I also read an article posted by LFL - 'He just wants to say Hi!' and realized that I have the pushy puppy. Perhaps that is an adolescent thing, but when my OH's stepdaughter brought her dog (that doesn't like other dogs much) over Biscuit wouldn't leave her alone and she snapped and chased Biscuit down. I said it's not her fault when SDd went to chastise her, she was just telling Biscuit to leave her alone. And then as Talking Terms instructed I stood between them and made calming signals when Biscuit was bugging her again and after a few moments Biscuit walked away and lay down. We were all amazed. It works!!

I am 3/4 into Mine! and most of the training is what we already do. However I was able to give Biscuit a bone for the first time in months and she let me 'borrow' it from her for a few minutes in exchange for a little piece of steak. She'd never have done that before.

When I finish that I will start on Click to Calm and then I want to clicker train.

We are all being more aware of each other and Biscuit seems to sense that we're trying to read her signals. Our son has been quite surprising in that he wants to work with her now instead of antagonizing her by inviting her to chase him. He's showing a lot more patience and has been calmer himself, I really didn't know he had it in him.

I can't thank you enough for all the advice, it has been such a big help.

Am trying to attach a couple of pics from the park yesterday, Biscuit meeting a poodle and my daughter feeding a chickadee.

Re: Behaviour update

Am glad people here were able to offer you such good advice & things are working out for you all

I have a new dog who has had little socialisation so is very reactive to other dogs. I've also made alot of progress with her by reading recommended books (have nearly finished Click to Calm - excellent book!) & from members here giving me some brilliant advice!

Thats brilliant.
When you stood between them and made calming signals, what exactly did you do?

Stood half sideways, with most of my back to Bridget (other dog), said 'Ah-ah' to Biscuit, but not sternly and kept looking at her and then turning my head (chin down) and looking away. It really was amazing how it worked on Biscuit and Bridget was calmer after that as well. That book rocks!

I forwarded LFL's article to my Step-daughter because one of the things that struck me about it was that you can and should step in front or between to reassure your dog and let her know you won't allow her to be harassed if another dog is jumpy or rude like my dog was being. Then they don't have to get defensive. Bridget was a rescue and has always been nervous and sometimes defensive around other dogs. I've really got my SDd interested in all this stuff, she's now third on my list to borrow 'On Talking Terms'.
