Crate Training

Hi,

There will be some times (maybe 3 days a week) when my bichon frise will be left alone for a few hours. So, i obviously want to make him as comfy and chilled out as possible.

What do everyone think of this crate (NOZtoNOZ Sof Pen n2 Pet Gates & Pens UK) or is this too large for a small dog. I will obviously be putting puppy pads, food and water in there aswell.

Also, if you know of any other good products i'd love to hear them.

Thanks,
Darren

Hi Darren,

It looks really cool, but I would still recommend an actual crate for your puppy for crate training, this is more like a play pen

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Do you think we should get the play pen for crate training and then the play pen for when we are out at work etc?

Regards,
Darren

Re: Crate Training

Yep its a cool crate you gunna get, planty of room so the puppy will feel comfortable in it.

My dog loves his crate and even goes in it for a snooze during the day, in fact all the anilmals tend to end up snoozing in it as they feel so comfortable in it.

Good luck.

Re: Crate Training

does it have a base? a proper crate has a base so if you can line in with newspaper so if there is ever and accident its easily cleaned up......Maya has never messed her crate in the house but she is not great in the car gets sick and worse.....with the crate its easily cleaned up u just wipe it out with disinfectant and its ready to go again. shes rarely uses the crate indoors now but its invauable in the car still!

Hi Darren,

Just a proper metal crate will be more than enough for both crate training, and when you are out.

You can buy a larger crate than is actually required, and use a divider in it until he is toilet trained (you don't want to encourage him to rest at one end and toilet at the other). Then when he is toilet trained sufficiently (doesn't have to be perfect), you can remove the divider.

When toilet training give him plenty of opportunities to go outside and do his business, and obviously praise him when he gets it right.

Ignore any accidents, but if you catch him mid-flow/poop, do pick him up and take him outside so that he can finish off in the right place. If you don't catch him mid-flow, still take him outside just in case he does more.

Initially you'll need to take him out to toilet every hour as well as:

When he wakes from sleeping
Shortly after eating
First thing in the morning
Last thing at night
After play/exercise, and/or if he gets excited

There will of course be accidents, but just pop him where he can't see you while you clean up. If you cover the crate in an old bed sheet (which is good to do as it makes it more den like), then you can pop him in there and pull the sheet down over the door while you clean up.

Hope this helps

Angela
