im not sure what to do for best...

okay bare with me ....
Odin is my 8 months old GSD pup,
Hes never been very good with staying home alone.
Recently i started a new job which meant i left the house at half 2 and hubby gets in at half 3.
i started on tuesday and Odin has been REALLY good no barking or crying to my knowledge and no damage...
but he wont touch his toys or treats whilst were out :S
now this morning hubby went to work at 5am and left the stare gate open.
at night Odin has our bedroom (not the bed) and the landing to do as he pleases always has.
with hubby leaving the gate open it allowed him to go into the hallway and kitchen (which is where he is left during the day whilst were at work)
i thought he will be okay hell come back up if he wants to...
but instead he laid at the bottom of the stairs shredding my rug until i went and told him off... why?
and how can i stop this?

Probably because his teeth are playing him up. About 8 - 14 months is when the adult teeth bed into the jaw and consequently chewing is at its worse (or thats my understanding).

Re: im not sure what to do for best...

Have you tried a kong with him?

Our BC X Lab (long departed) had to be left for several hours occasionally because we were both working and she was very destructive - chair rungs, wastepaper baskets, you name it - but we didn't blame her, we knew it was boredom and the BC temperament. She got a lot better with time but was never totally trustworthy. But she would never touch a chew or a toy while we were out. (And then I found out chews shouldn't be left anyway.)

With our current GS X BC we were able to spend much more time (husband retired) getting her used to being left and she's never been destructive. And although she's very playful and loves her toys it's all interactive and she doesn't play on her own.

Good luck! Takes time.
