Neck biting
Hi everyone
I've got a bit of a problem with my 20-month-old staffy cross. We rescued him when he was about 6 months and generally he's doing really well and is a lovely, sweet dog. When he plays with certain dogs, he likes to grab at their necks, ears and collars with his teeth. There doesn't seem to be any aggression in it and mostly the other dogs are happy to keep playing with him. On one occasion, another dog yelped and he immediately let go, suggesting that he is just playing and realised when it went too far. I know this is common behaviour for young puppies, and I was told by several people that he would grow out of it, but it's clear he's not going to. The problem is that some dog owners don't like it (although most I know realise it is rough play). As it is only some dogs he does it to, I am currently putting a muzzle on him when I meet them, but I would really welcome suggestions on how to stop him doing it altogether. When he does it, I can only get him to stop by grabbing his collar as he ignores any commands. Thanks in advance for any tips ![]()

Re: Neck biting
My bro's staffie loved that game....even with their cat...if puss only let him!!
I would say train him to obey "stop" and choose dogs who like to play like this and owners who do not mind...to socialize... To say the truth my lil dog is scared of big ones...and any neck bite would send him into panic...Look for playmates his size or a bit bigger...

Re: Neck biting
Thanks everyone!
I think I'll just keep an eye out for the dogs (or their owners) who don't like it and keep him on the lead when they're around ![]()

Re: Neck biting
It is perfectly normal and tells me, at least, that he is a nice natured dog who just wants to make friends. If the other dog is comfortable and say, comes back for more when you take your dog away, there is no problem. The trouble is, so many people do not know their own dogs or dogs in general and think he is being aggressive, possibly because he is a staffie, but that is their problem. Just get to know which ones they are and avoid them, feel sorry for their dogs as they are never allowed to be dogs.
I once met a woman who told her dog off for sniffing my dog's bum, saying it was disgusting! I certainly would not muzzle him, there is no need and will make the other dog owners avoid him. That could cause all sorts of problems when he is doing fine as he is.
