Cats and dog ...advice please x

We recently got a rescue Staffy 2 weeks ago called Bruno. He is 7 yrs old and an absolute dream to have.Since his arrival, the cats now live upstairs as Bruno can't help himself but to chase them.He sees them on the windowsill and gets all excited .He doesn't growl or bare his teeth so I don't know whether he wants to 'play' ? or kill them ? We are getting a baby gate in a couple of days to see if this will help, does anyone have any other advice about introductions or does this prove that he will never like cats ? also....he is very dog/people friendly but tends to be over exhuberant with his greetings which obviously some dogs and people dont like.He tries to dominate the other dog by putting his front paws on the back of their necks. We do keep him on a short lead when he meets other dogs and keep the situation under control as much as we can as well as walking away. What can we do to teach him to greet nicely ?

Thanks in advance xxx

Re: Cats and dog ...advice please x

We've got 2 dogs & 2 cats. Roxy (GSD) our second dog was very excitable when meeting the cats & is still a bit too interested in them.

As she is quite big & kept following them we kept her on her lead initially when we were all sitting down in the evenings & he cats wanted to come in with us all. This helped an awful lot as it meant that no one was excluded, everyone could see everyone but the cats weren't at risk of being chased.

I don't think Roxy would have hurt them but I didn;t want it to turn in to a game of chase every time & then become habit.

We also did clicker training sessions broinging Roxy to meet each cats, making her sit down then treating them both together.

Just take it slowly & make sure the cats srene't being left out. If they appear stressed then get a Feliway diffuser, I'm sure this helped with my two.

Good luck
