Behaviourist

Sorry need a Rant.

Some of you may remember we are having trouble walking Dillon, he was jumping up us when we walked him and we had trouble controlling him.

Well we where advised to take him to a behaviourist, I will not mention who by, or the association we went to, as things are still ongoing.

We took him to see this behaviourist 23/11/10 she talked about clicker training, to stop taking him to training and only take him on short walks. She wanted us to keep a weekly diary and send them to her, (which we did, plus with the diary we have asked her questions). She said she would send us a hard copy of our consultation, we spent 2 hours with her it costs us £95 and we have not heard a thing from her.

We have told the person who recommended her and they are going to look into this for us, they are not impressed.

We are rather annoyed that she has not even sent us the hard copy or replied to anything we have sent her.

Sorry about that. RANT over

Re: Behaviourist

Did she do anything to help the problem, or did she just talk about it? What an easy way to earn a living! It is unfortunate that anyone can call themselves a behaviourist and charge all that money for sweet sod all, really, and puts you off ever employing someone else who may be able to help.

I once contacted one of those Dog Listeners (before I knew better) and she wanted £180 to come and talk to me for two hours. My only problem was Ferdie's fear of the car and I couldn't see how talking to me for two hours was going to cure him, so I spent my money (only £40 of it) on someone who did know how to cure him.

You rant all you like; I like to hear a good rant!

Re: Behaviourist

No she was no help at all, in fact we have started to sort the problem out with the help of someone on our breed site.

Re: Behaviourist

I suppose you could try to get your money back via the small claims court, but I think that would cost you even more money. I think a lot of these so-called behaviourist charge for talking to you, and doing nothing to help the problem. I wouldn't have the cheek personally; if I am charging for a service, I like to think I have done something to earn the money.

Re: Behaviourist

If you have contacted her and she is not returning calls or following up complain to the association she is certified by.

If she is an actual clinical behaviourist she will be certified by an org that has a strict code of practice.
If however she calls herself a behaviourist and isn't relevantly certified and qualified then that is another thing altogether

Sorry to hear that you are having this trouble, rant away

Yes she is, and we are going to look into this, I think we have given her enough time.

Some polite enquiries seem like a good plan - I alway think - keep things polite though - if it turns out she was taken ill or something you will feel guilty if you were a bit sharp in your letters etc.....

Re: Behaviourist

Name and shame I say.

How do you mean by your dog jumps up at you whilst walking?

What other things can't you control with him?

If you have a link to your original thread I'd be interested to read it.

I agree with this, so many people are coming down with Flu at the moment and for some it means 2 weeks in bed or even hospitalization

I don't know how you put a link in.
When I take him out, if we speak to anyone I starts jumping up me as if to say I'm here and you don't talk to anyone else, and after they had gone it sometimes took me 10mins. and I not joking I really mean 10 mins to get him back under control, he just carried on jumping and biting my arm, never growled and it was not nasty, but it hurt all the same, then he would just stop and carry on walking as if nothing had happened, then he started as soon as I walked out of the door, I just didn't know when it was going to happen. A complete nightmare and as he a large dog it was getting frightening. ( I said I, but he's the same with my Husband and when we walk him together)

I've have spoken to someone on the Briard site and she has had the same sort of problem and she told me to try a lemon spray at the side of his head. Well he does not like it one bit, he only has to see the bottle now and stops, so most of the time it seems to be working I can now walk he for 30 mins and not so much as a skip. It has not stopped him completely, but his still a puppy really (he will be 12 months old on Wednesday )but we are getting there.

Apart from that, he is a fairly good boy, well for a teenager anyway.

Hope that makes sense.
