at wits end...dog on sofa!

please help, we cant stop dog being in room with sofa as we have an open plan kitchen/living room, she is constantly jumping up on it and when we try to take her off it or give out she thinks its a game and runs around boucing from sofa to floor and around sofa and basically making it impossible to grab her and deal with her. when we do catch her she is put in her crate. its a big L-shaped sofa and i dont think putting stuff on it will help as knowing her she would still get up on it. we dont get quiet time on sofa as constantly on guard to keep her down, even if we arent on it she will be, loves cosying into the cushions and making herself at home! little divil!
what do we do? she has her own comfy bed that we pull up beside sofa so that she can feel close to us but thats no good.

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

Just be consistant and don't use the crate as a punishment as this is probably hwat has caused her to start the game of chase - I'd run a mock if i knew I was going to be locked away.

Reward her for being on her bed with lots of cuddles, treats and interaction.

Go from the sofa to her bed and reward, not to the crate.

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

do what hutch said - and she should wear a lead in the house so you can make her get off the sofa without having to catch her.

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

Have you tried teaching her "off"? Basically just put a high value treat on the floor and point at it. When she gets down to get it, say off. She will probably get straight back on, but then you repeat it as many times as it takes. You can also reward her for getting in her bed, saying "bed" when she is there. It will be a while before she will do it without the treat, but she will eventually. By chasing her, it is a good game.

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

How about sitting on the floor with them for a while and showing them that is a good place to be as well. Worked on its me or the dog!! Is there a specific reason why they can't be on the sofa? My sister doesn't allow hers, but mine curls up next to me.

I think some people just don't like the dogs on the furniture. I hope that it is the reason and not some idea that he will think he is the pack leader! When we had the retriever we had cloth sofas, so no, I didn't want him up there as I don't want to sit down and get covered in hairs. Now I have leather especially so they can get on the sofa!

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

"down" and "bed" are the 2 words she just doesnt get eventhough we are working on them. we dont want her on the sofa as she covers it in hair and slobbers. have been trying the other advice of putting her in her bed and rewarding her so we will keep going with that. she is a VERY bouncy 10mth old beagle so you can imagine the carry on!thanks for all the advice

You have to persevere with the training and be consistent. Just because it is taking a long time, doesn't mean she won't get it in the end. After all if you are offering to swap one of her favourite things (the sofa) for something else; you have to make certain that something else is worth giving up the sofa for.

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

You can use "off" to mean, "get off the sofa", "get off me!" etc. We don't allow our dog on the sofa without a throw or something to cover it on. She also needs our permission, so if we see her on the sofa without us there, she gets a look and told "off" and she'll get off... Took a while to be honest, but works for us

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

Rather than constantly telling her to get off and telling what she shouldn't do, tell her what you do want her to do.

Teach her a "send to place" behaviour (i.e. go to your bed) and make being (and staying) in her bed really rewarding. Amazing things happen there (she gets fed, gets to play fun clicker games involving going to her bed, you can give her a stuffed kong when she's there). Set her up to succeed every time.
