Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

Once she jumps off the sofa - dont chase. Just sit down the job is done (she is off the sofa) - reward once she calms down. If she gets on the sofa when you are sitting on it - push her off and say "off" - reward once on the floor.

Don't leave her unattended to get on the sofa - and teach her "in your bed". Reward her to settling else where (on the floor / in her bed).

Has she previously been able to get on the sofa - or is she young?

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

thank you all for your messages, yesterday by dinner time she hadnt been on sofa at all but then i said it to hubby over dinner and next thing she was on sofa! but the frequency is markedly decreasing and i think now when she does bounce up on sofa she realises herself that shes not meant to be up there as she no longer makes herself comfy on the cushions she just jumps back down again!
still cant work out what goes on in that head of hers!!!

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

Good luck with the training - it's not easy, but if there's a better reward on offer somewhere else she'll get there in the end.

(Mine's allowed on the sofa at the moment, but has to get off when I say so - it took a while to teach, but we got there in the end.)

Yours sounds like a really fun dog to have around.

Janet

Re: at wits end...dog on sofa!

we at one stage used a lead tethered to the sofa leg to keep alf from jumping up,and that taught him to settle on a comfy bed next to the sofa.we used the throw off the sofa,so that he had something familiar to lie on.
That worked a treat, but we let him on the sofa now,we couldn't resist thoses beagle eyes
