House trained untill NOW! Help :(

Our new rescue dog Shane has been brilliantly house trained untill now. We got him last monday and he's been fine and the door is always open for him to the back garden. Yesterday he took a pee on the carpet near the stairs! and today he pooped in the same place, we said "bad dog" yesterday and sent him outside for 10mins and same today but im really worried why he's started doing it? Are we doing something wrong? I assure you he's having the time of his life, 3-4 walks a day, good food, clean water and nice bed.

- My car was parked in the garden yesterday could that have put him off?
or
- The garden is concrete and obviously the carpet is soft, maybe that? He has been in the garden before though.

If anyone can help that'd be great.

Sounds like he is doing a bit of territory marking now he has settled in.

You need to get the smell off the carpet or he'll carry on going there. There's a product called Carpet Rescue that a number of vets sell or alternatively, wet the carpet with a solution of bio washing powder. What ever you use, try it on a test patch first somewhere not noticable.

I would go out with him at regular times and do the fuss/treat when he goes outside and just clean up and ignore him if it's inside. Unless you catch him in the act he won't have the faintest idea what you are shouting at him for.

also rememeber you should NEVER tell a dog off for eliminating in the house. Otherwise they associate weeing/pooing with being told off so, and this will cause you eeven more trouble - Hiding poo in quiet room you may not see or never going in front of you on a walk for fear of being told off.

I'd also suggest keeping the door closed so Doggie needs to make you aware of the need to go out. At first this may be very difficult so you need keep a watchful eye and take him/her out every hour or two.

Make sure you clean the carpet with some special cleaner to totally rid of the smell. Otherwise Doggie may associate the areas as 'theirs' to go.

your dog will be nervous in a new environment. something may have startled him. when you get a rescue dog (housetrained or not) it is always best to go over the basic house training again until they settle so they dont fall into bad habbits, i would just reward any toileting outside and clean where he goes inside with biological washing powder, it gets rid of the smell better then disinfectants.
