Change in Behaviour

We have recently gotten a new puppy and since then Bo (14 mths) has really started jumping up at people when we are out on walks. It's as though she is trying to get the persons attention before they see the puppy but it is really annoying as it's a full on run and jump. We have been through all this once as she was a jumpy pup but we thought we had cured it. I've ordered 2 long lines which I'm waiting to arrive but am not sure what to do.

My instinct would be to hold back both dogs and make them sit until the strangers approach but I don't want to hinder pups socialisation with people and other dogs? It also gives the wrong image that the dogs might be aggressive.

Any help gratefully received

Re: Change in Behaviour

Hi melster,

I think that you just need to correct it before it gets to the stage of actually running and jumping.
Try a distraction when walking or just keep him on a short lead, I do think that correction when you see him about to do it is key, and keep walking trying to ignore the people he wants to jump on.

Re: Change in Behaviour

To be honest I dont think it will hinder pups socialisation at all, I taught mine right from the start to sit when meeting people or at least stand wait. The earlier you can start training them the better. Usually most people cant resists pups anyway so its better to let them greet people on lead at least at first so you have control and can train them not to jump up. Usually with a pup you get plenty of volunteers for the human socialisation anyway. If the older one jumps up at people then the pups more likely to follow him in doing it anyway. I would if you can too do some individual training sessions with them each day. a couple of 10/15 minute ones each is usually enough without distraction, then practise what they learn when out. It might also be an idea to give them individual walks in between too if you dont already that way when practising the training outside you have more chance of teaching and keeping focus, where as if you have the two they can distract each other and if one gets whizzy it can set the other off.
