Pup eating her poop

I have noticed my 14wk gsd bitch eating her own poo. I understand that this is 'normal' behaviour as such in that a bitch will eat her puppies waste to clear it up.
She's done it a few times now. I go out with her into the garden and always manage to stop her eating it when she has done it outside, but twice now she has pooped in the boot of the car and eaten it and I just caught her doing it in the house.
She's usually clean in the house, 99% of the time she tells me she wants to go outside so this was just an accident inside.

Sometimes there are her poops in the garden from an earlier toilet and she won't touch those, presumably because they are cold and less appealing and I havent seen her trying to eat other dogs waste when I am out walking her.
Her worming is up to date and she is fed on Skinners dry dog food. A friend has suggested putting some pineapple in her food to make the stools less appealing .
Just wondering if there are any other tips to get her to stop?

Re: Pup eating her poop

In case it makes you feel any better (or worse) my 9 month old will still have a nibble if I'm not quick enough! I have heard pineapple works but have never tried it. There may be other supplements as well but someone may be along with what these are!

Re: Pup eating her poop

My 19-week old used to do this too when she pooped inside. I haven't done anything about it apart from telling her to 'leave it' if I catch her - I'm hoping it's just a puppy thing she will grow out of (and she's never tried to eat her poop when she goes outside). No solutions but you're not alone!

Re: Pup eating her poop

My chihuahuas will try to eat my dalmatians poop if i dont clean it up quick enough. They are raw fed and hes kibble fed. Someone told me its because it dosent digest properly and comes out still smelling of dog food. Not that I can tell tho, it still stinks to me! lol

I have also heard that pineapple helps. I have never tried it tho.

Re: Pup eating her poop

Our pup did that for a while and I heard all kinds of theories.

Dog might be hungry - feed him more.

Dog may not be getting what he needs from his food - change or add to the food.

Dog got in trouble for accidents during potty training so is cleaning his mess before you can get mad - never punish your puppy for an accident and always praise when he gets it right.

One thing that worked well for us was to give our puppy a treat every time she pooed. She got the treat and I grabbed the poo. It also works for the last theory I can think of right now; Dog thinks the poo must be really good if you're picking it up and maybe that you're going to eat it.

I buy doggy clean up bags and they are always on hand for walks and the yard. Thankfully Biscuit stopped and she only eats the odd rabbit poo now - a delicacy I'm told.

Re: Pup eating her poop

its not uncommon, but this might help

Stop Dog Eating Poop 1
Feed your dog a healthy and balanced diet.

The easiest balanced food to give your dog is dry kibble. Dry kibble is nutritionally balanced and results in less teeth tartar.

Make sure to get a high quality kibble, with good protein sources and no unhealthy fillers.

Some good kibble brands that I have tried include Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Nature's Variety Instinct and Orijen.

Help your dog reduce stress.

Identify situations that cause extreme stress in your dog, and try to reduce the number of stressful encounters.

In the meantime, practice managed desensitization exercises on your dog to help alleviate his stress response. To desensitize your dog, make sure that you are in control of the training environment. Start by exposing your dog to low levels of the stressful stimulus.

Treat and praise him for staying calm. Do some simple obedience commands (e.g. Sit) so that your dog is engaged with you in the presence of the stressful stimulus. When your dog is comfortable with the low-level stimulus; you can slowly increase its intensity.

If your dog starts to react badly; then you have moved forward too quickly. Stop and restart the exercise with a reduced stimulus level.

While conducting desensitization exercises, it is important to keep sessions short, fun, and rewarding for your dog so that he will begin to reassociate the stressful stimulus with positive experiences.

Stop Dog Eating Poop 3
Keep your dogs busy and occupied.

Bored dogs will often develop behavioral issues and cause significant property damage.

It is important to walk your dog regularly (preferably every day) and to provide interesting toys and activities to keep his mind sharp and engaged.

My dogs work for all of their food, either by performing dog obedience commands, or through interactive toys. If you provide a lot of alternative activities for your dog, he will be less likely to find unacceptable entertainment on his own, including eating his poop.

If you are busy, in the short-term, and do not have the time to give your dog the attention that he needs; consider sending him to dog daycare or hiring a pet sitter.
