Sofa hogging!
Well it's been a while since I've needed to ask for help, Henry and Boot are now 14 months old and are doing really well but we've hit a new problem.
As they are being well behaved in the lounge (ie not chewing cushions, chair legs etc) we are leaving them in there on the own for short periods while I'm upstairs or popping round the shops rather than shutting them in the kitchen. Only problem is as soon as my back is turned they jump up and get comfy on the sofa which we don't want them to do. They're not allowed up there when we're in the room, we've never had them on our laps even as little pups so this is a new behaviour for them. When I come back in I make them get back down on the floor but I could do with some good tips to get the message through to them that their place is on their bed by the telly, not on the sofa (although they do look adorable all snuggled up together, Boot using the cushions as a pillow )

Re: Sofa hogging!
Yes they're not daft are they? They know where the most comfortable place is!!
Try putting something on the sofa when you go out - big pile of newspapers, the ironing board or even dining room chairs, so that they physically can't get on it. If you do that several times, hopefully they will get the message. I had a new suite about two months ago and also purchased loose covers for it because I knew my lot would jump on it for a snooze. I could stop them but it wouldn't be fair as they are 12 yrs, 9 yrs and 2 yrs and I've allowed them to do it. Hope this helps. This is Leafy testing one of the new chairs..... Re: Sofa hogging!
Yeah I did think about putting something on there to stop them getting on the sofa but I wanted to teach them it was wrong rather than just block them. Mind you I guess if they are blocked from getting on it the penny might drop anyway

Re: Sofa hogging!
Henry gets off when I walk in or when I tell him to. He's pretty savvy and I think he only gets on there cos he likes to snuggle up to Boot. Needless to say Boot tries to look invisible and only gets off if I give him a shove so I know who the main culprit is!

Re: Sofa hogging!
The only way you will stop them is by not letting them in that room.. like you say you asren't there so they get up.. You can't prevent something like that...
I used to let mine have the run of the house apart from the living room.. They thought my bed was fantastic.. I'd didn't appreciate it much.. The bed smelling of dog is not my idea of a good nights sleep.. So if you are still going to let them in that room get some covers.. ![]()

Re: Sofa hogging!
I agree that the only way to stop them is shut them out of the room. I would be worried about putting anything heavy up there in case they pulled it down and hurt themselves.
My old retriever was not allowed on the bed and we lived in a bungalow. Never once tried to get on there when we were around and I never ever caught him up there. But my bed would be covered in retriever hairs, so I knew what he had been up to.
