Cav crying & barking
Our two year old KC Cav is a great dog however we have two problems with him. One indoors and one outdoors.
The indoor one is barking at the TV whenever there is animals on and yet he he never bothers whilst out walking!! The outdoor problem is that when we take him in the car to go walking. Once we get him out he gets so excited he starts to whimper? and this can continue throughout the walk. Also he cries when either my wife or I go into a shop. Its now getting very embarrassing. People look as though we are ill treating him. Please can anyone help us. ![]() |

Re: Cav crying & barking
With the TV noise have you tried treating him when he's quiet?
Whenever he hears an animal get his attention and treat if he's quiet - you'll have to be pretty quick to begin with geting in there with a treat before he starts to bark. Then you can gradually increase the time between treats if he's quiet. Not sure about the walking and whining - you could try the same method. |

Re: Cav crying & barking
I would try a number of things. For the TV problem, try teaching him a speak/quiet command. So praise him for barking and say "speak" a lot whilst he's barking and then put a treat under his nose and say "quiet" for a number of seconds a give him the treat. So when he starts say "quiet" and treat him for being quiet. Don't, however, treat him for barking as he must see "quiet" as the best command to follow as he gets a treat for it.
For the walking problem, I'd teach him a "watch me" command, or use a clicker. Use high-value treats (cheese, sausage, chicken etc.,) and as soon as he starts to wimper, get him to 'sit', 'down', whatever- do a sequence of basic obedience then move off when he's quiet. Repeat when he starts. With the clicker you can click when he's quiet and treat, then, when he starts wimpering, stop and as soon as he stops, click and treat. The shop problem is a bit of separation anxiety and you need to teach him that you going away is not a big deal and you will come back. How is he at home when you leave him? I would say bring a kong packed with peanut butter and some of his meal food (dry kibble) and, when you go into the shop, give it to him. However, personally, I would never leave my dog outside the shop for fear of him being stolen! |
