Unhappy Pooing weeing beagle! Desperate advice needed.

Hi, Im new and this is my first desperate post!!!

We got a beagle from a rescue society about 6 months ago and she is a lovely dog, perfect nature and seems to have settled well. BUT she continues to wee and poo all over the house. She has trashed every carpet to the point of no return and my house smells like a male urinal! I am so utterly ashamed to invite anyone to even come and see us anymore, the smell is so bad you can taste it.
We live in a rural location so she gets lots of nice long walks, and is let out again just before bed. As long as the weather is dry I leave the back door open so she can wander in and out. However she still messes in the house. No matter what we do she will have us up in the night either needing to go out or she does does it where she sleeps. Ive caught her several times in the act, and if I go shopping for a few hours then I know Im coming back to rivers of wee. She produces ENORMOUS quantities of poo, I have had her checked at the vet. Nothing was found. She has a mostly dry diet. She is 5. Ive hardly ever got cross with her as I dont want her to think she is getting fuss, but after 6 months Im at my wits end with her. Every carpet is ruined and Im at the point of sending her back to the rescue society. I know my son would be heartbroken, any advice would be very gratefully recieved.

Re: Pooing weeing beagle! Desperate advice needed.

All i can say is to try crate training at night until she is more relyable. It may be worth starting from scratch in respects to puppy training her as a pup. I wolud keep her to one room with a cleanable floor at least you have a bit of control in the house so shes not wrecking every room. Untill she is able to go for her toilets out side. Do lots of praise and a treat when she does do it out side. There are a few threads already on here that people are having the same problem as you. I think one of the threads contained about the crate training and tips. Its a hard one the only other advice is to ask a dog trainer for advice as to what you can do with her. Sorry im not more help. Im sure some one may have more advice then me. Good luck.

Good post Sullivan and i agree 100% it will be back to basics.

I crated my dogs and still do when i am out for long periods of time and it works a treat.
My dogs treat their crate as place to chill and sleep during the day, they come and go to the crate as they feel fit.

Thanks for rescuing especially a mature dog

Like Sullivan said you have to start from scratch. You need to get rid of all the piss smell - there are floor/rug cleaners especially for dog mess. (Normal cleaners aren't good for dogs and a lot of them smell like pee to them )If you have carpets get a steam cleaner and mix vinegar in with the water.
I'd definitely get a crate - put it in a quiet part of your house - and use it for periods throughout the day and at night. Make sure you stick to a routine - meals, walks, playtime, bedtime etc... at the same time. After her walk when she has settled and will probably want a snooze. Put her in the crate. When she wakes up put his lead on (not a retractable one) make a bit of fuss and take her straight outside to his designated bathroom. Keep her lead on this will help her focus and let him know you are not out there to sniff down the garden. Have your toilet phrase like go wee wee or whatever... Stay out til she's done the job.
After she has gone treat and lots of fuss and straight back in.
Scent Hounds can be infuriatingly stubborn but they are big foodies so have some little tasty ones and keep them in a sealed bag so she doesn't get a wiff of them until it is being given. Otherwise she'll just be fixated, dance around you and forget what she's outside for. Good luck. I know it's frustrating but you will get there

Re: Pooing weeing beagle! Desperate advice needed.

Hi,
I`ve been having the same trouble with my shih tzu, Harvey. He has a crate too, which he loves dearly and is a safe place as far as he`s concerned to relax and stash all his favourite toys (as well as socks, tea towels, slippers etc...) When we go out he goes in his crate and we leave the radio on for him. If he goes in his crate (which he does as he`s only known kennels for these first 5 months of his life), at least it`s confined and spares the carpet. Have you tried keeping a record of when he goes, as usually it starts to show a pattern of toilet habbits. Good luck.

Hi,

I would also suggest crate training her, it's not just for puppies, and I really think it would help.

Just like puppies, rescue dogs needs to settle in to a new home and crate training helps to make them feel safe and secure while they settle in to a new home and a new routine.

You say you hardly ever get cross, but unfortunately getting cross even just once is enough to make a dog fearful of toileting in front of you, so they will toilet in quiet when you're not around.

If you decide to crate train her, I would also suggest taking her out every few hours to let her eliminate, and when she does good give her lots of praise and a few treats.

The reason I suggest this is that being a rescue dog she may not have been taught to let humans know she needs to go toilet. And possibly she was never toilet trained.

So you need to go back to basics with training this. Whenever you take her out to toilet use a verbal cue like, toilet, wee wee, do biz, and then when she is actually doing her thing, use the verbal cue again, the same one each time. Wait until she has finished and give lots of verbal praise and a few treats.

Make sure you always take her out the same door when going for toilet, and always use the verbal cue.

You'll need to get some good pet deodoriser and clean previously soiled areas to remove her smell. Dogs have a keen sense of smell and can pick up the faintest scents, so if she can smell her urine and poo everywhere then in her mind she in the right place to eliminate.

With this in mind I have another suggestion. When she eliminates in the wrong place safe a small sample. Yep, I know yuck, but it works. Whether it's poo or pee (in the case of pee soak up some with some kitchen paper).

Then simply place the poo sample and the kitchen paper out side where you want her to go, and take her to these places when you go outside.

For help with crate training, have a read of this.

Please stick with her, I appreciate how frustrating it must be, but it's not her fault, as I said it's very likely that she wasn't taught these things.

Hi- and my sympathies!

I found a most incredible product for stain and smell removal- it is INCREDIBLE stuff - called PLANET URINE and it is from the USA.

It cost me £60 to send for it ( they do not market in the UK) but it was worth every penny. It removed old stains and the box has lasted me for ever.

This may save your carpets!!

I asked the company about selling it over here but they said it was too dear to ship or something.

Good luck!

Re: Pooing weeing beagle! Desperate advice needed.

Hello and welcome

I would expect pooing and weeing as the poor little beggar has had a bit of a rough time of it. Rescue centres are fabulous but toilet training I would have thought would be difficult to maintain in that environment.

I would take her out into the garden, close your door so she can't back in wait for a result plenty of praise and a treat I would and did do that every couple of hours.

Watch her when she starts rooting (looking for a spot to toilet) whisk her outside oh she may dribble and plop along the way but she will finish outside, brilliant.

Keep that up and as soon as she starts sniff she will look to you as she gets the message take her out. A door left open is only an invite to a house trained dog.

Now for the carpets, while ever there is a scent dogs love to go back to the same place. You need to get rid of the smell. Simple Solution from P@H

Good luck and keep us posted.

Sue

Hi..
I know exactly how you feel, my male beagle was the same.. Even yesterday, he cocked his leg up the kitchen dog gate and wee'd on my living room floor, strong suggestion would be to get laminate flooring..
Someone mentioned crating.. I tried this with my dog, but he still wee'd and pooed in his bed, and they say they are meant to be hygenic.. I even got up at 3am and 6am to let him out for a wee and he still did it indoors..
With the Beagle breed it does take a long long time for them to start weeing properly outdoors, and where you got her from a rescue centre, i'm sure the dog will have got used to weeing and pooeing inside its shelter, this is probably one of the reasons for why she is weeing inside.
My breeder recommended taking water away at night time, but I didn't feel happy with doing that, although I did try it one night and found that he didn't make as much mess... Are you wetting down her dry food?
