Re: labrador
How old is the dog? If he jumps up, the best way to stop it is simply to turn your back and ignore him, but you will have to tell your visitors to do the same. Don't talk to him or greet him until he is sat down again. It is best to teach him to sit and wait until visitors are inside, then go and greet them, but until he has got this message, just get everyone to turn their backs on him.

Re: labrador
When I adopted Dexter via a local rescue, he constantly jumped up at anyone walking past us - it was a nightmare!
He also leaped up at anyone visiting our home. I have found two things which help (I tried many more things but only these helped): 1 - when you're out walking with him, try and ensure *you* are BETWEEN him and anyone walking past. That way you act as a buffer and if he wants to jump up, it's that much harder for him as you're in the way. This really helped me. 2 - I'm afraid a lot of people may disapprove but the honest answer is, I used a water squirt bottle to stop Dexter jumping at anyone visiting. Nothing else was working and as he is a big and very strong, he had injured three people, one of whom he scratched so badly when jumping up that he drew blood. So I started keeping a bottle of lukewarm water by the front door and every single time someone came and Dex jumped, I squirted him on the back with water. I only had to do it four times - and he stopped jumping. Hope this helps a bit.

Re: labrador
Clicker is a good way to get a behaviour effectively and fairly quickly.
I have also heard about the water treatment method. Although not a kind way of going about it, this will prevent certain behaviours. I know of people who have stopped their dogs, who live outside in kennels from barking in the night. Starting with a cup of water in the face when they bark, graduating to a bucket. When they have to slepp on wet bedding and get a soaking for their troubles they soon learn. Not so good if 'Billy Burglar' comes a visiting though. Old Rex will be afraid to bark! Stu

What a terrible way to treat a dog, who is supposed to be a family member. Do you do that to your children when they start crying as well? Dogs need to be taught what you want them to do, not punished for being a dog.
