Help, Need advice, am intruducing a 6 and half week old Golden Cocker to my 9 month old Springer/Cocker Cross in 3 weeks, Never had two dogs before and can only get so much advice from books/tinternet!* will/can they share toys/water bowls/tennis balls etc...? I will introduce them on neutral ground but am worried the pup will bring my older (and quite well behaved) dog into bad habits in the house pooing dept and general puppy naughtiness, I don't think it would take much as Poppy is still very much a pup herself!ANY advice is welcome, however trivial!Thank You xx

Hi and congratulations on getting your new pup

We got our second puppy in June and we let them meet each other in our back garden, took about 15 minutes for the puppy not to run away from our older boy. They have seperate toys because puppy teeth and adult teeth require different things but they do tend to share and swap. Each wants what the other has got.

Definitely get seperate feeding and water bowls, just so that you can teach the puppy from day one that it can't steal from the older one so to avoid food aggression issues. We always have 2 bowls of water down, but they do share now as they are more comfortable with each other. Plus we used raised bowls and my boys was too high for the pup.

The one piece of advice I would strongly reccommend purely from personal experience is try to leave them to sort things out vetween themselves as much as possible when it comes to play etc. Like me you have probably read this loads, but instict overcomes you to protect the baby from the older boistrous dog, and with you older still being a pup they will still be really playful. We felt like we were constantly telling our boy off for the first 2 days but then completely backed off and things improved dramatically on there own when we stepped back.

Don't expect things to settle over night, we found our boy was in a constant state of excitement and just wouldn't switch off for about 4 weeks. We started really worrying about him because he was so tired but would only sleep with one eye open when the pup did. Our pup has been with us for 3 months and I would only say things have drastically calmed down over the last 5 to 6 weeks.

Remember to spend good quality one to one time with your older dog & pup seperately.

Great advise from Gill - can't think of a thing to add.
My 2 can get really rough with each other - when we bought Lilly home she weighed just over 1lb and Zippper weighs about 18lb, I used to panic but they just sorted it out between themselves, if Zipper got a little to rough Lilly would cry and Zipper would back right off and look really worried.
They are now 20 months and 7 months and still play like crazy together and Lilly's only 1/2 Zippers size now.

Hi congrats on getting a new puppy.

I also did this about two years ago, I had a female pup who was getting on great with her training, completely toilet trained, sat, lay down everything, then when she was about 7 months, I brought home a 21 wk old pup who had been abused since 8 weeks. It was a complete nightmare, my female pup completely turned around! She started weeing and pooing everywhere, wouldnt do anything she was told and when I let her off the lead, she wouldnt come back! I eventually had to pay hundreds to get a behaviourist in and she is ok now but it was very stressful and would never have two pups so young again!
