aggression issues with my rotti

I have a rotti that has started displaying dog-dog aggression when i walk him on the footpath, he is fine at group dog training classes, off-lead and with dogs he knows. He barks and lunges whenever he sees a strange dog when I'm walking him, I'm 5'2" and he weighs 50 kgs so there is a bit of a problem. I've tried training him using a check chain and positive reinforcement but it doesnt have any effect on him whatsoever he just gets over stimulated and doesnt respond to anything I do. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Re: aggression issues with my rotti

How old is your dog?? Is this a new thing?? It may be fear aggresion as opposed to outright dog-aggression. With my own dog I used to make him sit and watch me until the dog had passed, it takes time and patience. I always think the best course of action is to get a trainer to see why he is doing the things he's doing. For me, any kind of training issue cant really be solved online cos no-one has seen your dog to assess him properly Have you discussed his behaviour with your trainer? Sometimes when they have kicked off a bit we inadvertantly send signals down the lead that reinforce the behaviour rather than correct it - or we pat them to try to calm them down which again reinforces the behaviour. What sort of collar and lead do you use now?? If he is pulling you around you could use a dogmatic or a canny-collar to give you more control as you train him out of this latest phase
Best of luck - stay on the forums and let us know how you get on

Re: aggression issues with my rotti

Are you nervous of the situation, (the reason I ask is that I had the same situation with one of my dogs) Maybe he is sensing that you are not totally confident and he is trying to establish himself as 'pack' leader.

Re: aggression issues with my rotti

Like one of the other posters said you need to train him to look away and look at you when there is another dog close by.

When you see another dog are you pulling on the chain before he even notices, that could send signals to the dog to beware there is another dog coming.

Turn around when you spot another dog and face the other way, don't let the dog fixate on the other dog. Distract him even if you have to look daft by dancing around and getting his attention.

Re: aggression issues with my rotti

Has anything changed recently? The reason I ask is that we started with something very similar with our boy but with us it is because we have a new puppy and he obviously goes into protective mode on lead, but is completely fine off lead.

As others have said, best to speak to your trainer, they know you and your dog and will be able to help you better.

Good luck, I know how frustrating it can be
