Re mates staffie cross
My mate has a staffie cross that she got from a pup he is around 6-7 months old
He is very timid so much that her extended family are now asking if he has been hit, no one has ever hit him and she is now really worried about this. I know nothing of the breed but do seem to read alot about them been timid. any advice appreciated Pam

Re: Re mates staffie cross
How old was the pup when they got it? Have they been to puppy socialisation classes and also socialised as much as they possibly could at the beginning? If not, maybe going to a training class may help.
A friend of mine got a toy poodle at 19 weeks old from a breeder that had not socialised it at all . She was not beaten or anything, just didn't see the outside of the breeders house. This poodle is frightened of anything and everything yet they have a westie who they had from 8 weeks old after the poodle who they did all the socialising etc with and he is so outgoing etc. Unfortunately the poodle isn't copying the Westie. They have tried exposing her to as many experiences as possible, but unfortunately because she had a poor start in life she will probably always been more timid. |

Re: Re mates staffie cross
i have a 3 year old stafford and he is very timid. if one of us raises our voice (not at him) then he goes and gets in his bed. we have never ever hit him or screamed at him. he justs is wary of everything he has always been walked in the park and taken in car etc but justs seems a shy kinda pooch. surely whatever breed of dog you have can sometimes just be the quiet/timid one?????

Re: Re mates staffie cross
It could be the Staffie in him. Staffies are known to be bold, courageous tenacious etc etc but at certain ages or phases of their life something they have been very confident with can become a problem.
Socialising and familiarising them with as much and as many objects, people, animals and noises as possible really does help. My SBT wouldn't cross a bridge, I always had to carry him over whether it was a concrete, wooden, open sided or not. He's find now, well we haven't conquered flyovers yet. ![]() Encourage him don't force him to explore or conquer her fears and the person who is closes to him should give himcomfort and support to re-assure him. Its really worth putting the effort in now to ensure him becomes a well adjusted adult dog. I used to think a confident dog would become an aggressive dog, that is not true a timid dog that becomes fearful is more problematic. However he is very young and its all part of learning, he just needs reassuring. ![]() Sue Last edited by sskmick; 30-08-2008 at 12:26 PM.. Reason: Sorry referred to your dog as a he |
