toilet training

what is a good age to start toilet training a puppy and usually how long does it take?
i have a 6 week old puppy that should still be with its mum but unfortunatly cant be .
he does a wee everytime i put him in the garden but he is still weeing in the house and pooing. im assuming he is much to young to get the hang of it yet .
he also has started crying when he needs a wee !! is this a sign that he wants to go outside or is it just because he feels uncomfy?

Re: toilet training

Hi,
You need to be consistant and have bucket loads of patience when toilet training
Pups don't have any control over there bladder until they are around 5/6 months old. They need to go out often every 1/2 hour or so,then after playing, feeding, waking etc.

Go out with your pup and stay outside till he performs, give lots of praise and reward with a treat, maybe link a word while he going such as clean.

We used to take both ours upstairs at night and settle them down in their crates by our bed,if they woke during the night,we used to get up and take them out but extending the time each night by 5-10 minutes.

I'm not a fan of using puppy pads or newspaper as I personally think it takes longer to train the puppy as you are giving signals it's ok for them to toilet indoors.

Just a tip NEVER tell your pup off for toileting indoors, just take him out clean the area with bio washing powder and ignore what he has done.By telling a puppy off you will just encourage him to do it where he can't be seen or hide the evidence.
Just remember if he does have accidents it's your fault for not reading the signs, circling and sniffing etc.
Toilet training can be frustrating at times but you will get there eventually
Good Luck

Re: toilet training

It's really best to start toilet training a puppy AS SOON as you bring them home. Right from day one! otherwise, it could cause future problems and confusion... like if you use puppy pads indoors at first.

I agree with sallyanne, it can give a puppy the wrong idea and think that it's ok to toilet indoors... and can make toilet training harder in the long run.

Puppies really cannot hold on for very long at all! and I mean that literally.

I think sallyanne covered it all perfectly for you in her reply! So I will shut up now

Re: toilet training

At 6 weeks they have abosloutly NO bowl control.. so they will have to go when they need to and its not their fault...
however soon they will gain some form of control (not much) and you will be able to start the training..
It wouldnt hurt to start it now (as in take them into the garden after their food or water and wait)... and then praise like crazy, and give them a cuddle for it. However you have to expect alot of accidents indoors, as he has little control..

just NEVER tell him off.. if he starts to wee and you are near the back door (theres no point if ure far from it etc) take him out and tell him he is good..

always praise and good luck

Aww bless him! As he is only 6 weeks old I wouldn't expect too much from him, but you sound proud so far and that's great.

Yeah it's so easy when you have a tiny puppy, their poos are so small like a little suasage lol so easy to clean up if they have an accident. It also means they do tiny puddles too!

Some puppies "wee themselves" when they are over excited... Foxy dribbles a little bit when I get her favourite treats out lol.

Don't worry though, as he is only 6 weeks old that is VERY young for a puppy to catch on perfectly and his bladder control is going to be extremely weak imo... but if you're consistent with it he'll get there!

Have you got any photos of your new puppy? I would love to see some!
