Re: how i can learn my dog to sit

its 'teach' him, not learn him!! lol

i tend to say sit in a kind but firm way, and gently touch their hind encouraging them to sit down. when they do it give them a treat and congratulate them - that should do it

Re: how i can learn my dog to sit

I hold the treat in my hand just infront of their nose so they can smell it. Slowly move your hand back towards their bum, and in an effort to get the treat their backside will drop to the floor.

Just before their bum hits the floor, say "Sit!" firmly but nicely, and give them the treat when they are sitting. Keep practising this and eventually do it without moving the treat, then without the treat.

Worked a charm for Toby He now sits on command treat or not and he's only 9 weeks.

you could try a clicker when they sit after you have said the command and they do it, click it then give them the treat

Re: how i can learn my dog to sit

Sit and stand are two very different exercises.
Sit is easily taught by holding the foodbowl infront of the dog - showing it theres food in there, then lead the bowl over the pups head til the pups bum touches the floor. Followed by the command sit.

Stand can be difficult for some to teach - not for the dog to learn. A way I like to do it is to use shaping. This means putting the command on while the dog is doing what its supposed to do on its own - but yet without knowing.

Dogs stand all the time. And when it does, you put your chosen command on and praise it. Its a matter of very few sessions before the dog connects the command to the exercise.

Then you can add to the exercises, leave the dog while it sit/stands but remember to go slow. The first meter is always the toughest one. Then its a piece of cake really

I think the OP poster isn't English, so you'll have to excuse his grammar!

They say teaching a dog is one of the easiest ones to do, but when you have got a tiny puppy that's smaller than a kitten and goes absolutely crazy when it knows you have treats in your hand... teaching it to sit can be difficult and in a way just a waste of time lol because they aren't even taking any of it in (this is my own puppy btw).

Maybe you could by a good puppy training book validcode?

Re: how i can learn my dog to sit

With our boy moving the treat over his head worked and after about doing this 5 times he did it on command so was learnt very quickly.

Now with my girl that way did not work at all, she just stood on her hind legs jumping up trying to get at the treat so we physically had to gently put her into the sit position, this was seemed to take a little longer for her to get it, but we got there in the end.

As for the stand command, when they are sitting show them a treat and start moving it away from them so they have to stand to get it, bang in the command when they stand and loads of praise. I must admit I found this one much harder with my 2, and I don't actually think they do that on command

See, I knew it wasn't just me! I was told I was doing it wrong lol... I knew I wasn't. It's just literally impossible to teach Foxy the sit command with that technique. She does exactly what you just described.

I lower the treat over the back of her head and she just gets up on her back legs and walks backwards... I tried lowering my hand so that she couldn't stand up on her back legs and then she would just walk backwards on all 4 legs or just grab hold of my hand with her paws... that "natural" sit thing they do this way just isn't happening with Foxy

I am trying the technique where I persuade her bottom end down with a slight touch of my hand and say "Sit" then give her a treat... hopefully this will work.

Training sessions should be kept short. 10 minute sessions a few times a day should be enough. I wouldn't put a dog through training for 2 hours at a time, that is too long!

They get bored, and you need to make sure you're making it as interesting and fun as possible otherwise you're not going to get anywhere.

Puppies are like any young animal, everythings new and fun and they get easily distracted... so when your puppy is busy he isn't going to listen. You need to try and make yourself a little more interesting and fun maybe so that his attention is on you and not something else.

Like I said, 10 minute sessions... not 2 hours at a time lol.

sounds like you are having as much fun with Foxy as we are with Piper with this hehe. I was pulling my hair out because the tecnique had worked with my boy the year before, but she just wasn't having any of it. Maybe its cuz girls are more intelligent thinking "I'm not playing some silly game watching the treat, I'll just take it thanks"
