Cobi attacks maya while walking

WHY?

I don't understand this dog anymore haha
everytime me and my husband go for a walk cobi is fine for the first 5 mins and sometimes we have a little run together where he just attacks maya. And its not play fighting, he really goes for her and its a struggle to have walks with them like that.
Is he jealous because maya is faster than him?
why is he doing this?
they go on superb with each other all the other times... Maybe they have sometimes a little argument but nothing serious.

When I walk them myself together they are fine but I don't have a run with them then so don't know If its that.

Re: Cobi attacks maya while walking

If he's only doing it when you're running, don't run with them. I wouldn't run them anyway to be honest, they are too young and you risk damaging their joints, especially on a hard surface.

You'd be better walking them seperately to be honest. They both need to get used to spending time alone.

Re: Cobi attacks maya while walking

I do walk them seperatly too, and me and my husband walk them together too as its nice to go for a walk together, I don't see nothing wrong with that.
Its not like we run for ages. Maybe for a half a minute or minute most, just for fun and not exercise LOL
I have a feeling that that's a jealous thing, but I'm not sure

how is running bad for them? In the garden they run for ages, do I have to make them stop doing this?

Re: Cobi attacks maya while walking

Too much exercise at a young age can affect their joints, this includes running, both on walks and in the garden. I would especially be concerned about hips in a GSD (not sure what hips are like in Northern Innuits!) Did the breeders give you a guide to exercising the pups? How much, what type etc? How much exercise are they getting?

They (behaviourists and trainers) reckon that if you have two pups together, to get the bets ot of them training wise, you need to ensure the pups spend twice as much time alone with you as they spend with each other. Not easy to do, so walking them seperately makes things easier.

I don't doubt dogs get jealous, but they don't get jealous the other can run faster. From what you have said about Cobi so far, (growling with a bone, both at you and Maya, now this) he seems a little insecure, so maybe try and work on building his confidence.

Re: Cobi attacks maya while walking

I know about their hips and I wouldn't say they get too much exercise.
They get walked twice per day for not longer than 20-30 mins.
the rest in the garden.

The breeder of the gsd advised us about their hips and said we have to make sure as well not to let him jump in or out the van when we travel and stuff. But I knew about their hips problem from reading about the dogs.
But she never said not to let them run or so... None of the breeders did.

Training wise they are doing great... Cobi starts picking up and understanding what I actually mean LOL he learned two new things in three days! Stay and leave! I'm happy with that
Maya is no problem at all to train... Show her once or twice and she knows!

Tomorrow he is going to training so will see how he goes on with other dogs

Re: Cobi attacks maya while walking

yes, he jumps towards her and tries to bite.
overexcitment might be it!
Maybe he just doesnt know when to stop
When he plays with maya play fighting and she had enough he doesnt know when to stop there too.

Re: Cobi attacks maya while walking

As already said are yo sure they are not just playing roughly? I have whippets and when they all play together the teeth come out there is growling and snarling grabbing each other round the neck and by the legs. Also the odd squeal were one has bitten down a bit hard but its all play. I used to have 2 GSD father and son and our neighbour quite often knocked on the door and said the dogs were fighting in the garden. They weren't they were just playing rough.

Re: Cobi attacks maya while walking

My two GSDs play rough it looks like they are fighting but they are just playing when one plays to hard the other will walk away, the only time they get nasty with each other is if we have visitors come and we shut them in the garden together for a few mins till they cool down then they fight to get to the doors to get in but never bite each other they do the same when we go out and get them out of back of the van i think thats a little jealousy as both want to get out same time and we need to put leads on them, so one comes out before the other, sorry cant be more help.

Re: Cobi attacks maya while walking

thanks for the advise.. Maybe I overreact a little bit too
its not like that they make sqeeqie noises like hurt... Its just really looks
rough
and the growling might make it sound worse than it is.
Thanks for sharing ur experiences, I feel a bit better about the situation
