Toilet Training Issues in rescues

Please can anyone suggest anything
I have 2 rescued bassett hounds both are just over 12 months old, they were collected about 3 weeks apart. Both were supposedly toilet trained when we adopted them.
We have tried every piece of advise going regarding their toilet training and they just dont seem to be progressing. We have always praised when they go outside in the garden and if the door happens to be open they will always go outside if they can. The problem is when the door is closed they just dont ask at all. We let them out on a regualr basis and try telling them to "weewees" and they ignore us.We will then let them back in and 10 minutes later they just climb out of their basket and go in the middle of the room. I honestly get the impression they are doing it to be naughty now.I have tried everything to read the signals the are supposed to be giving me but they just dont get it.
This has been going on for a couple of months and i starting to loose patience now!

Please Help!

Re: Toilet Training Issues in rescues

Hi there and welcome
Thanks for rescuing

What sex are they?
It is tricky having two that are doing it as it's like they are showing each other it is okay behaviour.
Do you think a dog flap door would help?
We had a similar problem with our youngest Basset. She was 6 months old and housetrained. But not in ours. I think new place, different routine etc... makes them a bit forgetful.
I pretty much started from scratch and at (her usual) intervals I'd jump up and say "who needs a weewee?" quite funlike and enthusiastic and then rush to the garden door. She followed I'd wait til she was at the door and looking at it (waiting for it to be opened) and I'd say again "who needs a weewee?". Put her lead on and take her to the weespot in the garden. And saying go weewee and waiting... sometimes ages. When she went big praise sometimes a treat and straight back in. I know some of it sounds daft but I've found with our lovely, sometimes stubborn breed extra enthusiasm when you are teaching them works wonders.
We also started puting her in a crate when we went out. It took her about a month to be fully housetrained. (Although her only signal for letting us know is staring at the garden door. I'm working on her making a bit of noise)
Bassets make you a very patient person

Re: Toilet Training Issues in rescues

We have one of each Wilfred and Chloe.
We are trialing having them in a crate when we go out and they are always clean in there so i know they can hold it. I will give the other advice a try though.
I expected them to be stubborn thats why we love the breed i think they must just be very confused?

Re: Toilet Training Issues in rescues

Hi,

With rescues its always a good idea to start afresh as houndies wrote.

It's quite probable that they were not taught to ask to go toilet, so teaching this can take time.

As they are 12 months I would suggest taking them outside every 4/5 hours during the day to begin with (they can hold for longer but you want to set them up for success, not failure), as well as last thing at night and first thing in the morning.

When you take them out use a word of your choice, something simple, and use this word every time just before taking them out to toilet.

Do as you have been doing when they go, praise, and you can reinforce the desired behaviour by giving treats/petting etc.

Dogs, just like humans will have a routine with their toileting (if fed at the same times each day), so keep a diary of when you take them out, but also when they have accidents. You can then take them outside 5 mins before an accident is due.

Be vary patient when you do take them outside, every dog is different and some just take a while to relax and do their thing

Another important point worth mentioning, is that dogs have a highly developed sense of smell, so even after thoroughly cleaning the kitchen floor they will still be able to pick up the scent of their urine, and this will make them think that they are actually urinating in the right place.

So after cleaning the floor and air drying, also spray the floor with a pet urine deodorizer

Also have you thought about crate training them? This will help them to feel secure, it's their own safe place to rest. As well a being a great aid in overcoming this wetting issue.
