beagle help!

our beagle is 11 weeks old now and we have had him with us now for a week. we are crate training him and he seems to be getting on ok being left on his own for a few hours a day. we are finding however that he seems to be going crazy at particular times. in the morning at 7 and then at 9pm at night. its almost as though he knows its nearly time to be left in the morning and then at night that its nearly time for bed. surely he cant know this already?????
he will be calm the one minute , then the next he will be off trying to destroy everything in his wake! you can set your watch by him. every day at the same times. any help over this will be greatly appreciated as i cant seem to calm him down other than putting him back in the crate. whats going on??????
please help

Re: beagle help!

no unfortunately! he wakes us up at 6am every morning with his crying and barking. i take him out in the garden for 45 mins to try and tire him out a bit. then i get him in the house and let him run around for another 45 mins or so before i go out.i then go out for 3-4 hrs. on the night time we usually put him to bed in his crate at 10 but for the last 4 days he has just flipped at 9pm and decides he wants to chew everything and just generally go crazy. we need some tips on how to calm him/ counteract this madness????

Re: beagle help!

If you know when hes due to go crazy why dont you distract him or take him out for a short walk

he sounds bored to me.. beagles need pretty much constant mental stimulation (my friend breeds them)

And as for waking you up at around 6.. thats quite good for such ayoung dog... my labs are my alarm call at 7am every morning!

All puppies like to play and have bundles of energy. Play with him - tug of war, soft toys etc. Give him some things to do - nylabones, kongs etc. My pup likes plastic milk bottles with some of her food in it (supervise of course) and keeps her occupied.

Also leaving a pup for 3-4 hours during the day is too long in my opinion. The poor soul sounds bored and lonely to me.

Re: beagle help!

see, the last post is a prime example of what i was saying! there are so many viewpoints. getting "marley" was not something we jumped into and was something we looked into deeply over about 4 months. the 2 beagle books i brought both suggested that crate training was good for dogs and that they learn to accept confinement for periods like this. also various articles i read on the net said the same. there was alot more in favour of it than against. now im beginning to wonder whether we have made the right decision as there is so much conflicting advice out there! all responses over this are most appreciated though. many thanks

Re: beagle help!

the choice is with crates do you want a house left when you go out or chewed up?
crates are best for pups as they will go chewing.

his playing at them times as he knows your routine, and wants to play take him out, play with him, trier him out.
he needs his mind working. sounds a bit bored.

Re: beagle help!

All puppies have periods where they get really lively, I shouldn't worry, he will calm down eventually but for now enjoy playing with him it is a very special time for you and him. 4 hrs the maximum recommended time you should leave a dog alone so that is fine - dogs need to learn to spend a little time on their own.

Hmm i dont know id say 3 ours is ok.. 4 is pushing it but i wouldnt say its disasterous for a pup? In my opinion anyway if he is getting alot of stimulation throughout the rest of the day which it sounds like he isnt

Ooh I dont know, I wouldn't leave a young pup alone for that long. Maybe once they are toilet trained I would. Each to their own though.
