Red face Daisy's little game : Ditch the humans....

Hi
My 10 month of Short Haired German Pointer, Daisy has a bad habit that I really need to stop before she gets hurt or I have a breakdown- either one really

Now Daisy has been to puppy class and she is very well trained when you have her concentration. However, when she sees another dog she runs off to it and completely ignores me. I can whistle, shout, be really exciteable, I have tried walking or running in the opposite direction that kind of thing! Daisy gives it say 5 - 10 minutes of me shouting and whistling like a crazy woman and then runs back. I then ask her, enthusiasticly to come to me so I can get her on the lead - erm no chance ! She comes about 3 foot away from me then legs it back to the other person with the dog! Daisy likes to do this on average a couple of times before I can manage to get her back on the lead! Even if we are walking on a path and have walked on after we have seen another dog for while, she sometimes folds back and decides to go find some fun with the other dogs!

We try dominating Daisy (dog whisperer style) and she doesn't take that seriously. I am firm with her and don't let her be the dominant one in the house I try my best to gain her trust and respect. She has come on leaps and bounds (literally ) with the other parts of her training, but I just can't get her attention when she sees another dog!

Has anyone got any ideas? I am open to anything as I am worried she may run after a vicious dog or even end up on a road

If I had someone pushing me around "dog whisperer style" I wouldn't bother coming back at all!

You not a fan of the dog whisperer? We used to have a CRAZY weimeraner and it seemed to calm her down a bit (she still had crazy eyes though ) but Daisy thinks we are playing a game when we lay over her, I think she must think its cuddles time!

To be honest I can't understand why anyone would want to treat a dog that way? Surely there are positive ways to train that get the results you are looking for?

Whats her recall like when there arent any distractions. id work on that first and always rewaed her retur and reward her after putting the lead on, that way she will want you to put the lead on. even if it means you sitting there and putting the lead on and off for 5 mins a couple of times a day. shes more likely to let you put her lead on if theres something in it for her. but i would defo work on the recall away from distactions then start to introduce distarctions one at a time. Until then try keeping her on a long line when your out, call her back and give her treats and fuss randomly through out the walk. she will get there eventually.

I also would not recomend anything the dog whisperer does, his dogs are not happy dogs and he has been bitten on a number of occassions for doing some of the things he does.

Thanks for the advice will try that

Daisy is good at recall with no distractions but I generally reward her, ask her to stay and then give her the release command. Iwill start rewarding her when I put the lead on.

Don't worry, you aren't doing anyhting wrong my dopey Dobey is exactly the same! I have just spent 10 weeks training with an ex militatry/police dog trainer and I could always sucessfully walk to heel without the lead amongst all the other dogs without problem , get him out in a field on my own and he sees another dog an it all goes out the window!!

Hes only 12 months so I'm hoping he will grow out of it if I keep practicing. Sometimes I will take him out with a long training lead which I leave trailing behind him at least then if I see another dog I can just stand on it and I tell him "leave", works quite well. I know how you feel its really embarrasing and I get quite alot of peole yelling at me saying I shouldn't have him off a lead if I can't control him but how are you supposed to train them if you never let them off!!! Bol**cks to them I say, stay positive.

Well if that's your attitude don't complain when your dog runs up to dogs like mine that think like a pack and if one feels threatened the others WILL attack.

I agree with AJ my dogs would instantly get protective if a dog came running towards me. How can you train them if you can't let them loose you ask. Lessons would be the answer call around and I'm sure you will find a class that helps with off leash training eg agility lessons, obedience classes etc start on leash go to off leash and all the other owners are prepared if your dog doesn't listen...Jill

Im also fairly sure that there is a law that if you cannot control your dog off the lead 110% of the time they can complain to the council/pound/whatever and action be taken against you, i cant remember what action exactly but any action against you is unlikely to be a good thing.

My dog....funilly enough called Daisy is a 1year old lab and is SHOCKING at recall. IN the garden off the lead she'll come just from you clicking your fingers, everytime. Outside she'll come is she is on a flexi lead and you have a treat in your hand. If we are out in a field and she is off the lead and you call her, she will run up to you untill about 6ft, smell both your hands and then leg it if there are no treats present.

The other day we were lucky enough to have her on the lead when another owner let their dog off in the same field. Daisy was going mental, whining, spinning round in circles....cant imagine why we werent letting her go. We waited for the dog to leave and then waited another 5-10mins. As soon as we let that lead off of her she was gone straight down the other side to where the dog was, we called, we whistled everything, she ignored totally. Even when we walked down to her and were shouting "naughty girl" at her in the gruffest voice, she didnt even bother looking up....nihgtmare

Anyway, Daisy doesnt go off the lead now, its not worth the hassle, law suit or vets bills her inconsistent recall will cost us. With your issue however, try shouting her name and then running (stamping your feet) in the opposite direction. This used to work quite well for Daisy untill she figured out what was going on. Be prepared to grab the collor at high speeds though.
