calling for help again

hi, i'm calling for your help again,
i have a border collie who is 2 and a weimarrener who is 9mths they are brilliant dogs but we are having problems with the collie and her toilet habits,
My partners works from home so its not very often they are left on there own but when they were they did there buisness in the house, i was advised to crate them to get them out of the habit of going in the kitchen, so now everytime we leave the house they are crated but not for long periods of time and they don't make any mess so i know they can hold it and as soon as we come in they go outside and do there buisness, so the other day i said to my partner to leave them out of the crate and give them the run of the kitchen as it was hot he was only going to the shop and by the time he come back the collie had messed in the kitchen she is 2 and i don't think she should be doing this now, this was also happening at night they were messing in the kitchen they are now both upstair with us on there bed and they go all night.
The wiemarner is fine and now has started not to mess when out of the crate i would like to be able to solve this with the collie as i don't want to have to crate them all the time especially when its hot, do you have any advice how to get them out of this?
look forward to your replies.

You need to keep them crated hun, is there anyway you can keep windows open so air circulates and keeps them cool, or buy a fan?
If you crate them then dont crate them then u are confusing your dogs, You either do one or the other not both. Plus if they are clean in their crates then thats a good thing, and You can always leave the crate doors open during the day and stick them in there with a bone so you can potter about and do things. The crates should be a safe place for them both and it gives u a 5 min break xx

Re: calling for help again

It sounds to me like seperation anxiety if she is even doing her business indoors while only being left for a very short while.

What you need to do is go back to basics with her. Leave her in the kitchen, close the door, leave it about 30 seconds, open door again give loads of fuss and treat if she is clean, if not just clean up with no fuss and not making eye contact with her.

Gradually build up the time 1 minute, 2 mins, 5 mins etc etc and hopefully she will eventually learn.

Don't rush it, if at the end of 2 weeks you are only managing 5 minutes thats still great. With paitience you will get there.

Our boy was exactly the same. We would literally leave him to go to the toilet ourselves and he would wee. It only took just over a week to cure him by using the technique described above.

Re: calling for help again

Hi Donna,

Do you use a deodorizing cleaner in the kitchen after the Collie has urinated? Dogs have a very fine sense of smell as you know, so even the slightest whiff of their urine will make them think they are in the right place to pee

Get hold of a good deodorizer this will be a great help.

The best thing is to clean the floor first as you normally would, let it dry, then spray the deodorizer where needed and let it air dry.

Also have you tried taking them out to do toilet just before you need to go out, especially the Collie?

Puppies can't control their bladders until around 5/6 months, until then you need to give them plenty of opportunities to do toilet.

Hope this helps.

Angela
