Car rides. Carriers or free.

Foxy has been in the car about erm 6+ times, 3 times were to the vets and back.

The first few times she would be in her dog bag/carrier on the passengers floor. She was sick every time. Of course this was probably due to it being her first few times in the car and her being young.

The other night I took her out to pick my mum up from work, she wasn't in her bag this time, she was on the seat and then sat on my mums lap on the way home... she wasn't sick at all! looked rather happy actually.

So, could this be due to being confined in a carrier? and not being able to see where she is going? so she starts to be sick.

I have bought a dog car seat cover for the back and a doggy seatbelt. So from now on she will go on the backseat. I have a feeling she is going to be so much better riding like this from now on.

How do you carry your dogs in the car? Especially tiny dogs.

Re: Car rides. Carriers or free.

My lot always travel in cages in the back of the car. If I am taking more dogs than I have room for in the back they travel on the back seat but always with harnesses on. Some one told me it is now illegal to have a dog in the car that is not either fastened down wearing a harness or in a cage.

When the setter Zoe was young she didn't travel well in the back of the car but was fine on the seat wearing her harness she soon grew out of it though. Some dogs just don't travel well in the back

Dogs are often sick when they can't see out of the car.

Oh I know what you mean. I live in the countryside-ish too, so to get into town or anywhere really I have to go down roads that are terribly bumpy... they can even make me feel sickly lol.

Foxy will wear her harness and be attached to the seatbelt with a dog seatbelt clip that attatches to the seatbelt clip and her harness. I wouldn't let my dog roam free on the back seat whilst driving... that could be too dangerous. I also wasn't sure if that law had come in yet.

Just think, they say a human in the back seat without a seatbelt on is like an elephant coming into you (or something like that) if you have an accident. Some big dogs can weigh a human weight, so people really should strap them in!

6 hour drive! Woah, rather you than me
I'm sure it will be fine, as long as you make regular stops to let them stretch/pee etc

I did think this might be why she is sick. So I think from now on, I will ditch the carrier.

Re: Car rides. Carriers or free.

Well Foxy had to go for her 2nd injection today.

She sat in the back with my mum, and guess what... no sickness at all! She did really well, even with having her 2nd vaccine.

So she will obviously travel alot better out of the carrier

Re: Car rides. Carriers or free.

Aww glad you've sorted it for Foxy
We used the dog seatbelts you can get but our lot are just too big so they go in the boot in a crate. If we have to take them all out we put the back seats down and another crate goes in there as well.
Comfortable we could fit 4 dogs in but we're one short

Thanks

Yes, I am yet to try out her doggy seatbelt. She might protest lol
That's the good thing about tiny dogs, you can shove 'em anywhere! just kidding.

You'd be suprised how much extra room you can make in your car when you fold the back seats down!

Are you saying you want another?
