Some greyhound questions

Sorry everyone I know I'm taking over with all these questions lately. Feel free to tell me to shut up!

Here are some questions -

- What sort of show lead should my two greys have? One is black, one fawn. I have two very thin, nylon slipleads in black but I think they're not very secure.

- What way are gh's ''gaited''?

We are going to our first ringcraft class next week so I'd like to be a bit organised and also i'm wary that the 'teacher' or whoever won't have any greyhound experience

Re: Some greyhound questions

All dogs are 'gaited' hun, its just a word to describe movement. You will have to move fast enough for the dog to trot at a steady pace - but dont run away with yourself, lol!

Not sure what GH's are shown on, but would think it would be a thinner collar and lead/sliplead. Just go to the class and see whats what - no doubt there will be people on hand to help you in all aspects.

Any tips of trotting along with a young dog who as soon as you move off thinks ''yay mummy and me are going galloping, i'm a greyhound''

Practice!! LOL!!

If it were me (and I had this with my darling Maddie!!) I would just begin with a walk up and down, gradually increasing speed until dog is trotting. One of the pups, JD, is a little monkey also and sees gaiting as a chance to faff about and gallop and jump up, so its a right laugh at times, lol lol!!

Re: Some greyhound questions

Just what i've seen, not an expert! Greyhounds are usually shown on a thin collar/lead, with the collar up behind the dogs ears. I would guess a slip lead or half check would be OK.

and they don't race round the ring, just a steady trot.

Re: Some greyhound questions

Greyhounds are usually shown on a slip lead. I used a leather one for William and a rope one for Button. Some people use nylon I just prefered the leather on all my dogs. Some are shown on fine choke chains too but I don't think there are many shown on them now.

To gait them you want them to trot nicely at your side you will most likely have to run or jog with them to get them to find a speed that is comfortable for them. You don't want them rushing just a nice easy steady trot.

Have to agree with Ceearott Start slowly and only speed up when you feel in control
I always consider it a victory if I can enter and leave the ring with my dignity intact never mind whether we're placed or not
