Where to start?

Hi guys, I am getting my puppy this weekend, very excited! Shes a Keeshond. She comes with a great pedigree and has many show winners in her bloodline. I would like to train her for agility and possibly do the odd agility show, but maybe attend the occasional normal dog show as well. But this is my first puppy and i have no idea where to start...

Obviously she is very young and wouldn't be able to enter anything for quite some time, but I just don't understand where to begin with any of it, im a complete novice

Re: Where to start?

Get her used to being handled all over, by lots of different people. Easy to do with a fluffy puppy . and lots of socialising to make her 'bombproof'. As Keeshonds are free stood you want all her attention on you so get her used to following you and watching you for a treat/play.
For agility, it's much easier to train if the dog wants to play with a toy. Have a special toy that only comes out for fun/training (should be the same thing!), a fleece tuggy is ideal. That toy needs to be the best thing in the world! (after you of course ). If you have a dog that wants to play and will ignore everything else, you can teach them anything

Re: Where to start?

Yup agree with Tollisty

get yourself to some good citizen classes, that will give you a good grounwork and start on the basic positions and commands also excellent socialisation
Ringcraft classes, also finding out about local agility events so you can go along and watch

Re: Where to start?

Haha pictures, are second on my list once we get her, after cuddles of course! I think if I do choose to show her I am at a slight advantage as I have seen no other Kees up here and only ever heard about 1 of them! So Im half hoping I take her to a show and shes so unique she walks away with everything think i might be dreaming a little bit there though lol

We have information about very basic obedience classes, there aim is just to make it so you can go out without your dog embarrassing you! and I just found out we live quite close to Bon Accord Kennel Association who do Ring craft classes as well as regular *matches* I'm assuming this isnt dog fighting and instead some kind of mini show??? And they do 2 large open shows a year, so they can maybe help us with getting started. Agility we will work on once she has done with basic training

I feel like if anything I am going to let her down she is my first ever doggy and both her parents came in 3rd in their respective categories in the summer at crufts

Re: Where to start?

It doesn't matter how 'basic' the training is, it's all about socialising with as many different people and friendly dogs as possible. It can start before she has had a vaccinations done, carry her round town to get her used to cars, buses, bikes and different noises.
Ringcraft matches are like a little show, the perfect place to start with a puppy.

Re: Where to start?

unfortunately we don't live in town, so I cant take her around the busiest areas, but I will be carrying her to school where she will see lots of traffic, lots of children and buses, so she will get some interaction!
