Can someone tell me a little about companion shows?

I just joined the kc companion club with Aya. I was just wondering if someone knows about it? There are a few things I'd like to know. Do you need to register your dog before hand or do you register for classes on the day?
How confident should you be with showing to do to your first show? Is it informal?

Aya and I are starting ringcraft on the 5th september because she's just coming out of season (will be spayed in november) but there is a show near us in september (24th) so I wondered if it would be ok to take her even though we won't of done much training?

Any other pointers you can tell me would be apeciated

Re: Can someone tell me a little about companion shows?

Hi, I'm a member of the Companion Dog Club too. My first show was a fun dog show which was more or less the same as a Companion Show and we just turned up on the day not knowing what to do but had a look at the list of classes then just entered him into a few. The assistants at the shows will help you decide if you're unsure.

The first show we did I just turned up with Stan on a lead, his brushes and his bowl and water. We just walked round the ring and he got 1st place I coulnd't believe it.

The classes are more or less the same at each show and the first lot are pedigree then the novelty ones. I've never been to a training class in my life as we re-homed Stan and he was already trained but I have a friend who goes to training and she teaches me bits and bobs.

I've only just progressed to an open show this year which was fun but that's a bit more serious.

I love going to the companion shows and when we entered into one of the companion dog classes (you must take your certificate to enter those) we won 1st place then Best Companion Dog. It was lovely.

I'd say just go and have fun, watch the people in the ring before you and see what they do, don't go first and just keep a little distance from the dogs in front and behind of you. You will meet some great people and have a fun day out and if its not raining that's even better. I prefer the outdoor ones to the indoor as it gets a bit smelly in the local community centre

Have fun and I'm sure there are others out there that give you a few more tips.

Thanks Sadly we can't do anything other than the companion shows as Aya was private rehome and doesn't have papers. But I think she'd enjoy companion shows which is why I joined her up. She's a beautiful girly and I'd like to start getting more experiance in the dog world. We are joining SHCGB later this year as I want to be more active in the dog comunity Doesn't sound so bad now, think I might go next month
