Dogs in Rescue - Numbers

Hi,

Hope someone can help me.
I'm looking for some numbers of dogs in rescues/pounds this year/last year and the number of those put down for lack of a home.

I can find some for individual rescues but I'd like a ball park figure for all of UK.

Thanks!

Why don't you ask a vet about which body monitors the PTS cases for the region?

Re: Dogs in Rescue - Numbers

your best bet is to contact the rescues like rspca or battersea and ask who monitors such things, you might find that none do as there are some things they don't want to make apparent, although saying that there will be groups against putting animals down and they are likely to keep a tally. If not you may have to contact all rescues and compile a list yourself

Re: Dogs in Rescue - Numbers

Thanks, its just a ball park figure Im looking for.

I just saw this on a rescue website for England

Would this sound about right
121,693 and a
recorded figure of 6,500 had to be put to sleep?

more than likely yes! Although i don't have the stats, But most will try to not put down unless they are that ill or there is nothing no home no help. Cn i ask what you are compiling this for?

Re: Dogs in Rescue - Numbers

Thanks,

Yep I work in a school and am beginning a community and social responsibility project with a local animal home so want some stats to show why this is an important area that needs awareness!

Hopefully inspiring a new generation in the community into adopting animals.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

Good luck with it
I'm thinking of doing something similar for a workbased learning project at college, though it will probably be for my own county rather than nationwide

Re: Dogs in Rescue - Numbers

Trouble is alot of pounds won't have it in the public domain that they put to sleep, so I would estimate the figure is higher than offical stats.

I always quote the dogs trust stats on the matter as it can be hard to get a number.

Battersea may be useful too as they are public in their sad need to have to put dogs to sleep.... am I imagining that they said a third of dogs are PTS or is that staffies or bull breeds.
