Jack - 5yr old Border Collie type dog

Jack is a wonderful dog that has melted the hearts of many a dog loving individual. He is currently being fostered by myself on behalf of Forest Dog Rescue (www.forest-dog-rescue.org.uk).

The Rescue ensure that all their dogs are neutured, microchipped, vaccinated and de-fleaed, de-wormed as necessary.

He lives with myself, two children (aged 8 & 11) and their father. He seems to be happy living within a family environment, and is fine with the next door neighbour's 2 year old girl (she looks after him when I am away during the day). He can get quite excited in play though and so I would not feel happy recommending him for a home with young children (I think that Forest Dog Rescue do not allow dogs to be homed with young children anyway).

There are aspects of life that he is unsure about as he has not had much experience out of the environment outside the home, it would seem (he was kept in the back garden in his previous life before Rescue). He needs some support in the outside world as he is a little uncertain about it all still, but he is getting there. Other dogs are a source of enormous excitement to him and he desperately wants to play when he meets another dog (there is rarely aggression present from him unless the other dog challenges him).

I am currently educating him about the world outside of the home environment, and he is learning fast. Cows and horses in fields seem to be of no concern to him at all now (stick a rider on a horse and he is a little confused though. Lol). He does tend to want to follow anything that runs though, and this is most certainly the collie within him!

He is very clever and eager to learn for the chance to win prizes (doggy treats). He has bags of energy in him and can walk for miles, then come home and run around the garden like a mad thing! Jack loves life - he has a perpetual smile on his face! I would love to see him become an agility dog and put his intelligence and energy to good use.

Mostly, I want to see him homed somewhere where he will have plenty of space to run about, a comfy bed, rare moments when he's left alone, clear guidance & boundaries, fun and lots of love (Jack loves cuddles!!).

Please click here to see his blog to read about his journey. Please contact me if you would like any further information. We would love to hear from you.

Thank you for reading!

Re: Jack - 5yr old Border Collie type dog

What a lovely dog. I wish I could help but I've just adopted a lovely 7 year old Border Collie who is not good with other dogs. She was at the Blue Cross for 3 months and didn't have much interest as she's an older dog. We lost our previous dog (also a rescued border collie cross) recently.

I wish more people would consider a rescue dog as they are so rewarding and loving (and so many dogs need loving homes). It's become a bit of a mission to encourage more people to rescue a dog and I've written a post to try and spread the word: Why rescue a border collie?

Best of luck with finding a forever home for Jack.

Thank you for your reply. I shall have a look at your post.

For anyone out there considering a rescue dog, I believe that there are many advantages to giving a home to a rescue dog. These are just a few of them:
  • Mostly they are house trained (or just need a little reminding that they are house trained)
  • Often they come with 'commands' that are already understood, like 'sit', 'come', or my personal favourite, 'off!'
  • There are no surprises in the size of the dog (it won't grow any bigger unless you get a rescue puppy)
  • Rescue centres often find a 'best match' between Adopter and Doggy adoptee, so that you and your new dog can live in harmony (who knows what a puppy will grow up to be like??)
  • It is so rewarding giving a dog a home and watching him grow into the best dog he can be because of your time, effort and love.
  • Most of all, the love you get back from your rescue dog is wonderful. They may all show their appreciation in different ways of course, but if you put in the effort for your dog they will return it in kind.
..... AND you're even more fortunate if the rescue dog has been fostered because the fosterers will have already provided guidance for the dog, and the dog is not stressed from being kept in kennels. You will get a fuller picture of what the dog is actually like. Foster carers will be honest too because they want to find their foster dog the best home they can with a person or people that will love him/her.
