Question Advice for new beginners owners?

I'm hoping to get a cocker spaniel sometime in the future and have no experience in owning a dog. Does anyone have any advice on owning one or know any good/reliable dog breeders in Cambridge/England. Thanks

Re: Advice for new beginners owners?

I have a show cocker spaniel. I would say that you need to be prepared for an intelligent, active dog. My dog has an almost border collie brain, he's that clever. He's also very active and needs 2 x 1 hour walks MINIMUM every day, with at least 30 minutes of that off lead. He also goes to obedience classes once a week and agility classes once a week, and he gets 1 x 2-3 hour walk in the local country park every sunday. I trained him myself (I'm 18) and he has been hard work (especially the teenage phase) but he is a fab dog and my best friend.

What type do you want, working or show? Show are less active and working cockers need loads of exercise and mental stimulation (a bit like border collies). Show types have long coats which can either be stripped or clipped, workers usually have a shorter coat which doesn't grow that long.
