Clueless, it can affect any dog at any age. The only forum I could find to do with this condition was an American one though it was very informative and there are lots of dog owners on there who are going through the same as us and ones who's dogs have had to adapt to it. It has been really useful to read up on it and I was so suprised at how common it is.

I'm sure dog owners already know but the second time I took Lilly to the vet, she asked me if Lilly had eaten anything that contained onion, ie left over chinese, spag bol etc. Onion can be very toxic to dogs and can cause this awful disease. Lilly hadn't had any onion but please think before you give your dogs left overs

The most important component of treating anemia is treating the underlying disease process that is causing the anemia. If anemia is severe, patients might require a blood transfusion, or multiple transfusions. Administer all medications as prescribed by your veterinarian. Monitor your pet for pale gums, extreme weakness, anorexia, increased respiratory rate, or recurrence of any of the original clinical signs.

You put that across very well and it's good advice to follow. The problem with treating the cause of the anemia is that it can be brought on by several things and the vets find it impossible to pin-point the cause. I have also read that on many forums, that makes it very frustrating and you do find yourself keep saying "I wonder if". Lilly has responded well to treatment and we'll know how well after her next blood test in August. Her breathing is still affected though which is something that does worry me but the vet said it's more than likely the medication. I must admit she does seem worse at night after having all her meds during the day. We are reducing her meds again on Friday so I'm hoping it may improve then.
