Re: Foxy is going to the Vets tomorrow to get checked

Hi,
I looked at your bio and see that Foxie is a puppy.

If you havent already, it would be good to have a full blood workup to be able to have a baseline to watch for changes against. This has saved my babies by catching problems as they are starting becase so much of the time it will show up here first!

I always encourage people to not let the medical community dismiss owners intuitive eelings about the seriousness about symptoms. There are several wholistic email lists over at yahoo.com as well which provide several wonderful natural solutions which help dogs recover from stressful or short term situations as well.

Please keep posting with how things turn out at the Vets!

Mine is just getting over one although I treat her myself with echnaecia (sp) and other homeopathic products and she has got over hers in just under a week.

Most UTIs with the correct medication sort themselves out pretty quickly. Discomfort will ease quite soon and completely cleared up by day 7.

Sometimes Cystitis shows same symptoms of a UTI. For cystitis put one small spoonful Sodium Bicarbonate in drinking water to get urine back to alkaline

Aww, it must be awful for pets to have these problems. I know what it can feel like, I've had cystitis quite a few times.

Well she's got antibiotics for 7 days, I really hope they sort the problem out. I don't like seeing her upset.

Good tip! thanks. I hope it isn't going to be a recurring thing...

I'm not really sure how dogs get a UTI, whether it's through bacteria getting in there or due to stress. If so, it might have been when she went for her first vaccine last week. She started changing the day after... or maybe it has nothing to do with that, but she did react rather badly to the injection. She got extremely stressed and upset.

I've done a search on Google, it also says a food too high in Protein can cause UTI's:
Quote:
A side note -- very very often dogs will be 'prone' to UTI's. A pup who develops one early either may have actually had one since you got it (and may have developed it from Mom). But it'w worth watching to make sure that crystals (forerunners to kidney stones) don't develop. You also have to be very aware to make sure that either the food you are feeding isn't too protein-rich or that there isn't a problem because the dog can't process protein normally.

Catching something like this early can help you elminate problems. Often times we humans tend to feed based on our own interpretation of advertising, and unfortunately it's not just regular big business that wants us to buy their product. Some of the ultra premium foods may be too rich for some dogs, as well as specialty foods. For years we humans have been programmed to think that "high protein" is something desirable. My first experience many years ago with a dog with UTI problems came about after I switched my older dog to Purina One (this was MANY years ago -- like 15 +) thinking that giving her that "hi-pro glow" was a good thing. It was the most expensive dogfood on the market at the time and I darned near sent her into kidney collapse because it was WAY too high protein for a dog her age. IN fact, the only dog that NEEDS a high protein diet is a working dog who is expending huge energy running all day long. There are high protein diets (like an Atkins type diet for dogs) that can be great for them, but they have to be specially formulated to balance things out so the dog can use all that protein.
Foxy is on Purina Pro Plan Puppy Small Breed... and I think it's protein is 32%

Typical Analysis
Protein 32.0%
Oil 21.0%
Ash 7.0%
Fibre 2.0%
Calcium 1.3%
Phosphorous 1.0%
Copper (as copper sulphate) 20 mg/kg
Selenium (as sodium selenite) 0.15 mg/kg

Is that too high for a puppy? What percentage of protein would you recommend roughly?
