Question Puppy coughing when drinking

Hi everyone...... wondering if anyone has come across this, or can give me any advice?

In the past couple of days our Dalmatian puppy seems to cough everytime she has a drink of water. She only coughs about 2 to 3 coughs and brings nothing up, but seems to do it everytime. She doesn't seem to drink very fast so I don't think its because she's gulping or anything. She's completely fine with her food, even if I give her something with quite a lot of liquid such as goats milk and she definitely eats faster than she drinks

This is the only time she is doing it, she doesn't when she is playing or excited or anything like that.

I have googled this and to be honest some of the things I've read is quite scary such as Magaesophagus.

Is this something I should be worrying about? and should I really be going to the vets with it? Or am I just being a neurotic "new mum"

Our other dog never did this when he was a pup, so not sure if its normal or not.

Re: Puppy coughing when drinking

We've discovered what it is. She's started drinking out of Logan's (our older boy) water bowl that is too high for her. Lowering it has cured the coughing

So true! We have been much more relaxed this time round. When we got our boy last year he was our first pup and we thought he would break if he tripped up Soon realised that they are robust little things so haven't worried about Piper so much, but her cough was worrying.

So glad it was a simple solution

Re: Puppy coughing when drinking

Word of warning from the wise lol. Dont let em go after bees or wasps lol. My oz is a right watsit for this, and lo and behold he got stung last month! And true to form being my dog, he is allergic to stings! His little mouth and eyes really puffed up! Had to take him to the vets (on fathers day of all days 2) Cost me £110 for overnight stay as well! But hes ok now, and yes still after the stingy things little devil lol.

We to unfortunately learnt that the hard way. When Logan was about 14 weeks old he got stung on his ear, and yes you guessed it, another thing he's allergic to!! His ear blew up to about the size of his body and he couldn't hold his head up so that cost us a fortune. And like you say..... he still hasn't learnt. We had to go back to the vets last month because he had been stung just below the eye which caused his head to blow up, yet still he chases tem around the garden!

Logan is allergic to everything and a right clumsy so and so. We have nearly got our own parking space at the vets with him lol. If Piper goes the same way as him we'll be bankrupt, because Logan's speciality is getting things that cost just under the insurance excess, or about £5 over so its not worth claiming!

Oh well, we love him to bits and wouldn't swap him for the world... warts and all
