Fatty acids are essential for all pets, especially dogs, and the richest forms of fatty acids are found in three major sources; beef fat, sunflower oil, and fish oil. Most all allergies as well as autoimmune conditions are the result of your dogs body over reacting to something. I would just add to the part about allergies - having done a lot of research on skin allergies in particular, and through speaking to vets and dermatologists, I have been advised that a dog with allergies should stick to Omega 3 for supplementation and avoid any specific supplementation of Omega 6/9, as this in itself can cause inflammation...it is ok for them to ingest small amounts through normal diet, but should not, for instance, be given any in the form of a fish oil/capsule with higher quantities.

I have recently started supplementing my dogs diet with salmon oil. One of my dogs has just had a TPLO so I hope it will help. She was speyed a few months ago and her coat has not been looking good and I have a bitch who has just whelped so I'm hoping for good results

Supermarkets have sales on now and again for tuna in oil, see if you can buy that as a treat for your dog, also so every now and again small amount of virgin olive oil will help joints and fur
If however you need a little more to help poor conditions, then flax seed oil is wonerdful and should be part of their diet if you are feeding your own recipes
