Question Neutering

The poll is about neutering.

I went to the vet ealier to take Foxy for her first vaccinations. The vet asked me if I am going to spay Foxy and I said yes. She said "well we spay dogs after they have had their first season, as this can reduce future problems of UTI's and helps the female organs to mature" etc.

I heard alot of people say this in the past, but alot of other people said it's a load of ball basically. And that it doesn't matter when you get a dog done, and doesn't matter if you get her done before her first ever season. So now I don't know when it will be best to get her spayed. Before she said this to me I would have just got her spayed before her first season.

What did you do with your dogs?

Re: Neutering

I get my bitches done at 18 months old unless they have any medical problems then i get them done sooner. I get them done that late so everything has time to grow and mature etc x

Re: Neutering

If I was going to neuter either of my dogs it would be after they had fully matured, around 2 yrs old.(Meg is now spayed)She was two months off her second birthday.

Re: Neutering

Interesting link Sallyanne.

There is no option for me, which would be that I do not spay or neuter unless there is a specific reason for doing so. I don't do it because of what might happen, although I accept there are risks involved in that. For me, they are outweighed by the benefits. Unwanted pregnancy doesn't even come into it, as I am more than capable of proper supervision of my in season bitches.

When to get your bitch spayed depends a lot on her breed. Large breed dogs mature later, and are at greater risk of urinary incontinence if spayed early on.

You need to look at all the positives and negavtives and make an informed decision yourself.

Re: Neutering

We have had Jessie spayed about 3 weeks ago she is now 17 months old , we had her at 12 months old her previous owners think she had a light firdt season at 8 months and she next came into season just after we got her about the end of feb , she sailed through the op and never once messed with her stitches she was as good as gold . Daisy came into season for the first time about 6 weeks ago she is roughly the same age as Jessie , so we wont be having her spayed till late september ,i may even hang on till she has a second season .Our vet wouldnt have done it till they were 12 months anyway with or without a season but always advised to let them have at least one season first to allow to mature hormonally and phsically .

Re: Neutering

My current bitch whom is almost 10 years old i had speyed before her first season - if I am honest I wasn't that clued up on it. However she is as fit as a fiddle and does not seem affected by it.

Our next girl dog I will not be having speyed at all - for various reasons, It is a choice we have made after research, advise etc. We won't be irresponsible and if any boy doggies come knocking on our door we will send them packing LOL
