Coat Condition

My Tibetan Terriers coat has gone horrible, she is just one year old. and so far has been growing a lovely long coat, from the back it hangs down the sides about 8 inches, but just lately, the area in front of her back legs and rump area has got matted badly every day, so I have been combing it with detangler, and we bathed her last week and conditioned her lots. But this area has now lost such a lot of fur due to me combing the mats out she is almost bald, it is on both legs, I dont think she is biting herself because I havent seen it wet.
The rest of her coat although a little dry is okay. Has anyone any suggestions what I could put on it to help or give her a supplement to help.??

Re: Coat Condition

Cod liver oil is great for the coat a couple of tsp on her food every day . Food can be a big part in general health what do you feed ? also long haired dogs do get matted and sometimes you could be better off with a bristle brush to get the tangles out , when you brush her and you find a tangle start brushing it out from the bottom upwards as dragging the tangle from near the skin down can sometimes make the not worse , maybe while the weather is warm you could get her clipped shorter to make her more comfortable and allow it to grow back at the end of the summer .

Re: Coat Condition

Has she been wormed and deflead recently? Sounds to me if she has a skin irritation. Please take her to the vet to be sure and for the correct product for your dog.

Not sure about Tibetans, but I have Powderpuffs and their coats are manageable until they hit the adult coat change stage usually around 1 year of age

Re: Coat Condition

Ive looked carefully at her skin, but there is nothing on it, and it is only in this one area which is odd because her back and chest and head are lovely and also the tail is good, so I dont think its a skin problem but I will keep an eye on her for the next week or so and decide. She is still on puppy food wet and dry mixed, I am changing her next week when I run out of the food onto adult food. I will try the cod liver oil, my sister told me about that.
I dont want to clip her because its only one area of her fur. And she is so beautiful.
But I am wondering if it is a change in her coat from puppy to adult.

Re: Coat Condition

At the moment it is Pedigree Chum puppy sachets and the same dry balls.
Ive had lots of suggestions of what food to try her on, my sister recommends James Welbeloved, but Im open to suggestions if anyone has a similar long haired dog.

It is a change from puppy to adult and she it matting where most tt's do it is a horrible stage to try to get through but there are a lot of rules to follow

1. Try to bath every 3 days and condition

2. Never dry brush or comb alway wet the coat.

3. Dont pull any knots with a comb always tease them gently with your fingers first

4. Try not to let them get wet (easier said than done with British weather!!!)

5. Never leave them wet this is when is knots worse

Food should be rich in oil I feed Royal Canin or Robbies Holistic to my TTs, JWB is ok but did find my two were a bit loose when I fed this - one of the best foods is the Royal Canin Shih Tzu - it has a high digestion rate and they poo little rabbit pellets, keeps it off the precious coat
