Puppy Vaccinations

Just asking for some advice regarding puppy vaccinations... my sister has recently bought a patterdale terrier puppy. The pups about 7 months old, and everyone's really happy with his progress..

She failed to ask the man who she aquired him from about any of his boosters
A stupid thing to do, but she was excited..

I basically told her about the potential risks surrounding not knowing if her pups vaccinated. Although the puppy hasnt showed signs of illness, and has actually shared the house with a mature dog, aswell as enjoying walks in the park for weeks now. The likelyhood is that it has recieved its needles in my opinion & and she is going to contact a vet asap, but this hasnt stopped her from worrying since i told her.

Is he too old to have his baby needles? or is it ok for him to go straight on to his anual injections ?

Would just really put our minds to rest if someone who may have experience with a situation like this could give us their thoughts

Thanks in advance

Re: Puppy Vaccinations

Hi Boblett, If this pup has had his puppy vaccinations the breeder should of given your sister his vaccination card. Obviously this didnt happen so your sister will have to start all over again with your vet. This consists of two vaccinations 10 days apart and you will have to keep your new dog indoors.

Re: Puppy Vaccinations

he's already been out and about...which has included mixing with other dogs

I got told there is such thing as overdosing on vaccines.. wont re-doing the vaccines if he's already had them be bad for him?

Can you not get back in touch with the person she got the puppy from and ask them? Best to make sure but her vet will need the vaccination record. If you dont get this then theres no proof and your vet will want to start allover again.

Re: Puppy Vaccinations

You NEVER need to start a vaccination course for a dog again. Never.

Boblet, if your sister asks the vet to do a titre test, this will tell her if the pup is immune and what, if any, vaccs the pup needs. I know of people who have (deliberately and having made an informed choice) never had their puppy vaccinated, yet they still test immune at 4 years old.

Yes it will, I would take the dog to the vets and get him titre tested to see if he is immune to the common diseases and only vaccinate if he isn't. Vaccinating yearly can be unneccessary and detrimental to health.

Re: Puppy Vaccinations

so its likely the vet will recomend a titre test... not that its a problem, but how much is this likely to cost?

Thanks for all your inputs by the way

No, it's likely the vet will reccomend to vaccinate himanyway. But if he reccomedns a course of vaccs, change your vet!

There is no current clinical evidence that proves adverse reactions to vaccines, but they can and do happen. There is no clinical evidence as who is going to fund it? Vaccine manufacturers?!

You will always need to ask for a titre test, sometimes insist upon it, before a vet will do it.

Of course, plenty of dogs do get their yearly vaccines routinely, with no problems whatsoever. Equally, I know of someone who's dog never left the vets after having her booster, despite the vet doing a full health check prior to it and saying she was in perfect health.
