weve got her on James Wellbeloved puppy, she seems ok on it, thriving and enjoying eating it, is it one of the best ones for her?

Re: recommended diet for GSD

Most of the GSD owners I know, either feed Raw, James Wellbeloved, Burns, Arden Grange or Skinners.
All 3 of my woofers are fed on Burns kibble, and are quite fond of it, they are thriving there coats are glossy, soo its all good.
Is there a reason you want to change her over, did the breeders feed JWB, she is only 8 weeks isnt she
xx

Re: recommended diet for GSD

Personally I'm not a massive fan of JWB because of their "special added ingredients" and since their factories were taken over a few years back the food hasn't been such high quality.
That said, it's not a bad food, it's good in fact but I think there are better foods for less than or equal to the price you pay for JWB.

The important thing which a decent food is that a specific meat (e.g. chicken not "meat and animal derivatives") should be the first ingredient.
Ideally you'd also look for something wheat/gluten free, as my understanding is that wheat and simular grains don't actually have much nutitional value to dogs anyway and are difficult for them to digest.
The following link tells you what to look for in a good kibble:

Choosing a good kibble (dry dog food)

Here are a few foods that I think are good quality and value:

Orijen
- 75% meat and 25% fruit and veg.
ORIJEN Biologically Appropriate Dog and Cat Foods | Orijen Pet Foods .co.uk

You can buy this at Zooplus as far as I'm aware

Applaws Dry dog food
- 75% meat

MPM Products - Applaws Natural Dry food

- They also do a wet food

Whites Premium

Whites Premium Puppy Dog Food Analysis

Burns

Burns Pet Nutrition - Real Food For Pets

Arden Grange

Puppy Food from Arden Grange

CSJ
CP27 Puppy
CP27 (Puppy) - CSJ Command Performance - CSJK9 Ltd.

CSJ-Original Natural Puppy
Natural Puppy - CSJ Original Dog Food - CSJK9 Ltd.

Skinners

Skinners Puppy and Junior
Skinners Dog Food | Puppy & Junior

Then wet foods:

Naturediet

-60% meat- high palatable- excellent totally natural food (nothing artificial at all! )
Natural Dog Food | Naturediet

Like you said your pup is doing fine atm on the JWB, so if you are happy with it, then the old phrase "If it ain't broke..." could well be relevant.

However whilst JWB is still a good food, IMO there are better foods on the market many of which are more economical.

Hope this helps anyway

I think Arden Grange is about a fiver cheaper, it is from our local supplier anyway, Burns is about the same price, if you shop around online you'll find the best deals

Re: recommended diet for GSD

Fenris is 16 weeks now and I changed him from Arden Grange to Hills when he was about 12 weeks . The breeder used AG and I was going to keep him on it but after talking to a few folk (one a breeder, another a vet - who my mam knows well and also someone who has a rescue shelter) I thought I would try him with something else ............the Hills was on special offer £29 for a big sack ,so got a small 3kg bag off MY vet free , slowly changed over and he was great with it .........also seemed to enjoy it more too.So off to local pet place and bought 6 sacks while they were on offer

One reason was I could get Hills locally the other was the AG made his poos runny. Since he changed over he seems much better and is not as hyper .

However, to be honest so long as the food 'does what it says' on the box and is a good standard then it is personal choice .

Re: recommended diet for GSD

Just lowering the tone of the forum for a moment, I used to feed JWB, I swapped them to burns because they were growing quite fast and didnt want any issues with bones etc, and now they poop less, twice a day regular as clockwork lol

Re: recommended diet for GSD

I feed my girl on Arden Grange, Nature Diet and RAW

It took a LOT of chopping and changing to find her a food she liked.
