are any vets here? advice needed please

hello there
I have a problem with my dog and wonder if anyone has veterinary qualifications and may give me a rough idea whats wrong.
I have a 7 1/2 yr old male staffie.
he has no ongoing health problems and eats and walks ok.
he recently had 2 bad teeth extracted under anasthetic.
today I looked at his eyes and saw something I havent previusly noticed.
it is a small black spot at the bottom of his iris in his right eye. it is just at the bottom where the iris meets the white part and is a circl approx 2 mm in diameter.
the eye is not bloodshot or discoloured and does not show up a different colour on flash photos.,
does anyone have any idea what this could be.
I cannot take him directly to the vets as its 30 miles away and I am currently unwell so cannot drive him there for a few weeks, and have no one else who can take me.
in the mean time I am worried although he appears fine in himself
I hope someone can advise me here

Hi
From your description its sounds likely to be either a uveal cyst or melanoma.
Im afraid that your normal vet would probably have a hard time telling the difference between the two as they look so similar.
Cysts require no treatment while melanomas are usually monitored for an increase in size and any changes to the eye. There is a risk of metastasis from a melanoma and if it causes problems often the eye needs to be removed.
Anyway if his eye otherwise seems ok, I would advise you to take him as soon as you are able to be checked over.

hi
I have read about melanomas and it looks similar but havent found any info on uveal cysts.
I have to take him to the vets but being disabled and the vet being 30 miles away is a problem
I am worried as its near christmas if it is a melanoma it wont be treated in time.
still thanx for emailing me.

If you really can't get to the vet, could you take some photos and email them to the vet? Just a thought.

Most vets will do housecalls if needed, I would call them up and explain the situation

Quite a few dog walkers in my area also run dog taxi's for just this type of thing.
Maybe it would be worth checking

Re: are any vets here? advice needed please

hi there
the problem is my vet is the pdsa which is 30 miles away, as I cannot afford the cost of expensive vets.I do have pet insurance but they are picky about what they cover and may not cover this,..they also have 120 pounds excess, which I cant afford at this moment..
I did take my dog to a local vet and they were rather rude, and frankly once I had handed over the 30 pounds consultation fee they could neither remeber my dogs name or even what sex he was! so they shant be getting a visit from me again.
I have discovered a potential cheaper vets, the medivet chain, but again I dont want to really see a vet who is working as one only for the money, rather than love for the animals as I love my dog, and dont want another expensive private vet turning their nose up at him because he is a staffy,
I dont mind paying a vet who is decent, treats me and my dogs with respect and makes my dog feel better/
but I have seen two private vets in the last few years, both were extremely bad attitudes..

Well he needs to see someone, and if the that means a cheaper private vet(whatever their attitude) it has to be done..

Ring the PDSA and explain the situation, see what they say. Or get someone else to take them for you.
