Re: My dog has itchy skin

Wafcol salmon and potato is a good food for dogs with skin problems. I had my dog on that for a while when he had itchy skin.

Re: My dog has itchy skin

I am going through this at the mo with my pup, but the vets wanted to rule out loads of stuff first.
- fleas
- mites (skin & ear)
- bacterial skin infection (small cut could get infected and start it off etc)
- yeast infection

Maggie had itchy skin and a rash on her tummy - I was convinced it was fleas, but couldnt find anything and we flea her regularly, so then we had to put her on a course of antibiotics for her tummy, which cleared it up but it came back. Next we had to bath her in this anti-fungal/anti-bac wash twice a week to see if that helped!!

Finally, when she was still scratching like mad they put her on a food elimination diet which she has been on for 4 weeks where she cant eat anything other than her new food - fingers crossed it seems to be working and we are off to the vet tomorrow to monitor progress!

I have loads of info and sites etc about allergies if you need it, so just post back if you dont get any luck with the food change!

Nimrod had skin allergies, we had blood tests etc and eventually moved her onto burns dried dog food and some raw meat and tripe. It cleared up a lot.

I think you are doing the right thing, I would seriously recommend NOT going on the prescription diet stuff if it is the same as ours - it is awful. It is the Hills Prescription z/d Ultra Allergen Free.

After going on it on the vets advice I started reading up on it and even their own helpline said not to use it as Maggie was only 7 months when she started it and it is not for dogs under 12 months. Also, it might have helped her skin but it is full of rubbish and her behaviour has definitely changed for the worse while she has been on it. Plus to top it off it is bloody expensive!!

I am insisting tomorrow that I will be changing foods when we go to the vet - I am thinking of trying Burns too. I wanted to use Orijen, as this is meant to be a brilliant dry food and no grain/cereals etc, but they don't use a single meat /protein source, and as we don't know what it is she is allergic to I am a bit wary about putting her on this.

Good luck with the Burns!

Sorry to hear about your dogs itchy skin. I know people who have that problem and have tried everything and nothing works. If you've tried all kinds of foods, and all the vets recommended medications and nothing seems to work, then you owe it to your pet and yourself to try a new approach. There is help that will comfort both your pet and you. View here: Itcheez a Slumber Dog Product

I am suspicious that this a sales pitch.

I'll leave it to a mod to decide though.

My young golden was scratching and biting herself from feb to june this year.
After having all the usual things done at the vets to eliminate things and nothing worked,i put her on skinners field and trial duck and rice, she not only stopped scratching but put on weight and conditioned up lovely.

I did try burns but that didnt work for her.
