Unhappy Dog Hair Loss

Hi - I'm after a little help! I have a seven year old norfolk terrier/Jack Russell who has developed a form of alopecia. There are two patches of complete hari loss in different places with no irritation. We have not changes his diet or routine.

Re: Dog Hair Loss

Is he on a wheat-free hypoallergenic diet?
Not suggesting he's allergic to wheat or anything but as my boy has entered his senior years I found that cutting out the wheat was the best thing I ever did for him xxx

Re: Dog Hair Loss

I used the tub of ointemnt for a very (huge!) deep spit in my lads paw last year and it healed up within 2 days, I havent used the spray but going by the pictures and what their other product did for his pad ive no doubts it will work. They do a guarantee too dont know if you get a refund, theres no steroids used in it either, its worth a look id say.
The tub is excellent - cant recommend it enough

Amazing Natural Cream for itchy skin on dogs

edit: theres lots of dollar signs on the site but when added to the basket its 14 pounds
Just looked at the pictures again ....... its well recommended and again - it worked a miracle on my boy -- top top stuff

Re: Dog Hair Loss

Did your vet say it was alopecia?

Its not something like mange is it? That causes hair loss.

Re: Dog Hair Loss

Hello,

The hair loss/alopecia your dog is experiencing could be down to any number of causes.

It could be an allergic reaction to something though probably not food as you say there's been no change in diet.

Mites or mange might be behind it. If no irritation it could even be some sort of fungal infection.

Without wishing to state the obvious in any way - a visit to the vet is the best thing to do. The problem can then be diagnosed and treatment advised.

A pretty informative site with some general information on hair loss in dogs is Dog Hair Loss - Canine Hair Loss - Dog Skin Problems

Hope you get the bottom of it soon and your dog makes a full recovery.

Reg.

Re: Dog Hair Loss

I am assuming you have been to the vets for tests?

And i am assuming the hair loss is somewhere that couldnt be being rubbed off by a collar for example?

Some of the things your vet will test for

1 - mange/mites/ringworm or other paracite
2 - thyroid - thyroid problems can cause hair loss
3 - cushings - very serious if not treated
4 - addisons - the opposite condition of cushings and again very serious

All of the above are illnesses which need immediate treatment, and testing for before assuming its something else.

After those tests have been carried out and come back clear, at your dogs age its likely to be one of these

A) alopecia X
B) Seasonal Flank alopecia
C) alopecia black skin disease

All of them are king of ambiguous, of unknown (or disputed) causes and seem to be lumped together.

If your dog hasnt yet seen a vet then please please do so! Dont assume its nothing to worry about.
