Charli's leg update.....not impressed

Well its been 2 weeks since charli hurt her foot, she had xrays under sedation 2 weeks ago, no break found but swelling over growth plate. Bandaged up and told had to rest her. Took her back 1 week later for bandage change and check. Vet wanted to reapply bandage for another week to make sure there wasnt hairline break. Nurse reapplied bandage. After 4 days charli bandage slipped so took her off to get it reapplied. (£9.50 charge each time!!!)

Over the weekend she started limping on her foot again. I was sure her bandage was at fault so took it upon myself to remove it and bandage leg myself. When i took bandage off she had 3 lots of padding, 3 gauze bandages and the heavy sticky bandage ontop. She had padding inbetween her toes causeing her toes to spay out and 3 sores on sides of foot, 1 of which was open and very sore.

As soon as bandage off she was walking with no problems. (i did place a dressing and small gauze bandage to stop any muck getting in open sore......but left toes exposed.)

She has vets Tues (today) and i will be having words as im not happy that they have caused her extra pain & discomfort..........come on ive seen dogs in bandages/plaster longer than 10 days and not have sores..........obvisouly somebody did something wrong by putting too much padding and not checking there was no pressure on areas...............and i paid nearly £10 for it

The padding between the toes is to stop sweat. If it wasn't there then your dogs foot can easily over heat and cause major problems!

Re: Charli's leg update.....not impressed

That's why I love my vet- he explains everything to me as he does it so I understand completely

I already knew how to put a bandage on but I didn't know the sweat bit, when Dave cut his pad the vet was doing a running commentary on treating and dressing it

Re: Charli's leg update.....not impressed

yeah the padding was put in a week after first bandage as her toes were sweaty......it was the amount though. I think the padding or bandages around her foot must have slipped or something and caused a pressure sore. Just makes you wonder if they leave too much to the nurses to do. Vet puts bandage on lasts 1 week......Nurse puts it on lasts 3 days!!!!

When Muddy had his bandages for six months, they were changed ever three days to stop this sort of thing happening. We did learn to do it ourselves though

This could be because of the way she had moved, doesn't mean it was a badly put on bandage. Lots of padding is need to support the leg in case there is a hairline facture- there is no point in a thin banaage as it wont support the leg, and a facture could get worse.

Re: Charli's leg update.....not impressed

The padding is what prevents sore's. Although if the bandage (the open weave material) was pulled too tight, or placed too loosely, this will cause problems either to circulation or throught slippage.

Was it cotton wool?

Nurses are usually miles better at placing dressings, as that is one of the many things they are trained to do. However it isnt as easy as it looks.

Foot bandaging is an art i have mastered, after 8 years or so of constantly having to dress Oscars foot.

Re: Charli's leg update.....not impressed

Her first bandage was padding(cotton wool type) with the Blue bandage ( weave type that sticks to itself) Her 2nd bandage was the same. (no sores or anything noticed then)
The problem bandage was padding normal gauze bandage, another layer of padding another gauze bandage and then a purple weave over bandage......it looked huge and the padding could be seen though bandage. This was 10 days after her injury and she had been useing leg fine up to that point (with bandage on) unfortunately for the 3rd bandage change she was taken off by nurse so i didnt see it go on to comment. (the 2nd change i was holding Charli so saw what went on)
Any way i will mention it too vets later
