Chews?

Hiya

My dog likes to chew something in the evenings. Recently he's been having rawhide bones to chew on but he keeps trying to swallow huge chunks, which I then have to pull out of his mouth. Is there any good chew that he can safely chew without me having to worry about him choking? Preferably it should be flavoured.

Re: Chews?

I think here you just have to end up keeping an eye on them. No matter what chews we've had, they always end up with chunks left which get stuck in throats nicely Pig's ears were the worst for us as more of an awkward shape.

Luckily Rupert has always been one to munch on things, but never to swallow, like you can give him socks/chews etc and he will chew and chew but not swallow until it is very small usually.

Re: Chews?

Do greenies last for hours? He can chew happily for 3 hours in the evening, and we need something that will last this long.

Are Nylabones any good?

Re: Chews?

Nylabones are great, but i think its the edible factor that makes dogs chew.

Oscar chews most evenings, but wont touch a Nylabone as he cant physically eat it. I also have my doubts that they are very flavoursome.

If a raw bone isnt an option, then maybe a huge white rawhide bone (you can get 26" ones from a company called Hollings) would suit him. Mine have these and they tend not to get huge chunks off. P@H used to do their own version, which was a good 2ft long.

Oscar is currently having a huge buffalo ear each evening, and i spend half my evening fishing it out from the back of his throat.

Re: Chews?

Nylabones do an edible bone:

Nylabone » Products » Edibles » Healthy EdiblesĀ® » Bacon Flavor Bone

Would this be better? Would it be as hard as the plastic ones, ie last him hours?

Ive tried those, and for my boys they didnt last long. Huge chunks came off that they swallowed whole.

Might be worth buying one and seeing how he goes. Depends on how strong of a chewer he is. Also, always get the biggest one they do.

Ive had some venison edible bones that i got from Zooplus. They were quite good.

Re: Chews?

edible nylabones dont last long at all.

there arent too many chews that last as long as rawhide unfortunately.

the big white rawhides do last longer than the standard stuff and dont go as gooey.

skyes favourite chews are Antos vegetable ones. they come in different shapes and sizes so last various lengths of time. really healthy too!
they also do treats called meaty bones, which are made of biscuit but are ridiculously solid!! my beagle was an incredible chewer and could get through most things in seconds but these things stumped him for a few days!

Re: Chews?

Nylabones are good once they get into them, what about the jumbones?
I wouldn't give rawhide chews though as quite a few dogs have died from choking on them
