New dog food trial

Hi

Just joined the forum having spent days reading posts about various foods !!!

Ive purchased some new food for my 12 year old lurcher and six year old whippet. I currently feed skinners crunchy. However I decided to try something different as I think their food can be improved.

The food Ive chosen is listed below. It looks good however the only concern Ive got is the high content of potatoes. I would be grateful if anyone could comment.

In my experience potato doesn't suit all dogs - I know Burns had problems with their Potato recipe when it first came out (I think it was something to do with Calcium content but not sure!)
If you like Salmon and want a natural food then Whites Premium do a great new recipe which isn't as expensive:

Ingredients: Fresh Salmon, White Rice, Oats, Peas, Salmon Oil, Hydrolysed Salmon Liver, Sunflower Oil, Seaweed, Tocopherol Rich Extracts, Minerals and Vitamins

Analysis: Protein 18.5%, Oil 9%, Fibre 2%

personally i wouldn't put a 12 year old dog on working food .even a 6 year old whippet would be looking to retire if its been worked hard

Potato is fine and one of the easier carbs for dogs to digest Nellie

You seem to recommend things like maizes and corns too - which arent good for them. Id have a look at the information your getting as your recommendations and ideas are a bit off the mark ..

Some dog food is sold as 'working' simply to avoid the vat. The food in question does two types of salmon feed one called finest and one called working. The difference ? nothing at all apart from one is cheaper due to exclusion of vat.

Retire a six year old whippet ? My lurcher is still working, although at a slower pace, at twelve years old. The whippets got years left in him. I generally let the dog decide when hes had enough.

I'm merely pointing out that although Potato is in theory OK, at least one company has found that it caused problems - I tried it and it did strange things to my dog's poo!

Maize is perfectly OK as a carb. Once it has been ground and cooked (during manufacturing process) there are no probs at all

Re: New dog food trial

Your wrong Nellie, its widely known maize in dog food offers little nutritional content, they simply cannot digets it due to their small digestive system. It may not kill them or have negative effects but it doesnt add anything. Dogs do not need carbs they need meat protein. They do not transfer carbs into energy like we do, they in fact have the opposite and process protein into energy. Potato is a carbohydrate that as a root is easier digested than a grain.
Id think it were more the Pork that would have had an effect on them rather than the potato - Though Burns are still manufacturing the Pork and Potato so it mustnt have had that many bad reports.

The way their body works is the important thing in this - there is a technical term for the transfer of foods into energy which I cant think of at the minute but theirs is from protein not carbs. That is why a BARF diet is so good - as its just meat with some veg to give vitamins. Its not a carb based diet

edit: you may have heard that the green eyes of potato are poionous - which they are - just like they are to humans..?
