Chance my baby, has been very picky about his food recently, refusing to eat it. He usually have JWB dry with a pouch as a treat once a week. Last week we ran out of JWB and my friend gave me a little bit of Chappie dry to tie us over, mix in with his JWB.

Ever since then he has been off his food and when I do get him to eat at the 'business end' its usually normal but sometimes sloppy or watery. He is back on his JWB and tonight I have tempted him to eat a little bit with some meat but he went outside because he was pasing around the house and when he squatted down it was just water coming from his bum.

He seems to be happy in himself and has been getting a little bit more sexual recently, he is coming up to 17mths old and is still entire and I have never had any tummy issues with him until recently. I can only put it down to either Chappie or the weather because he doesnt like to be too hot. With him being a Shar-Pei all them wrinkles get warm.

Can any gimme any ideas or anything to try? I was going to change him to the Wainwrights feed from Pets At Home but I don't know if he would eat it.

See how he goes for a day or 2 chapie is full of grain ect and may have just caused him to have his upset tummy , hopefully once its out of his system he should return to normal, any change of food again at the moment may just exagerate the problem and then you,l never know what was the cause of continued tummy trouble . I would always be tempted in your position feeding complete to have given him some of your meat rather than give him a different dog food if ever you run short again at least youl know whats gone in him .hope he feels better soon .

Him being ill might be totally unrelated to eating the chappie. If he has been ill for a week, it would be best to take him to the vet, especially in hot weather, as he could easily get dehydrated.

With regard to him eating usually, it is best to never 'tempt' him if you can help it. Put his food down, if he hasn't eaten it after say, 20 mins, pick it up again and he doesn't get fed until his next meal. If he is hungry, he will eat.

I am mainly worried, because he is a slim dog and if he looses any more weight hes gonna be non exhistant, lol!!
Every since we had him and you put food down it would be gone within 2 seconds flat until recently.

I will admit he has having the lamb and vegetable kibble, in the foil bag and he usually only gets either Duck or Fish, maybe he doesnt like the taste?
Also I have been getting free samples from my work of JWB and mixing them all together, maybe he thinks just one flavor is boring?
He does have a sweet tooth and loves to clean my yoggie pots out so I might get him some today pop it on his food and see how he goes.

emma, I appreciate it is hard to just not feed him if you worry about him losing weight, but it really is the quickest way to get him to eat properly in the long run. By adding stuff to his food you are going to make him more fussy and he'll end up eating less in the long run. Plus, sweetened youghurt isn't good for him.

You really should take him to the vets if he has had the runs for a week.

I would stick to one food, if he doesn't eat it, take it away until the next meal time. Dogs aren't stupid and they won't starve themselves, if he's hungry he'll eat........eventually.

I definatly wouldn't mess about adding more foods into the equation like eggs or yoghurt that will more than likely just exagerate the problem, when ours get soft/sloppy stools we don't change anything, just keep feeding as normal and it soon sorts itself out.

Having said that Chappie is not a good food and it is "easy to digest" so maybe that is why he's had soft stools; his digestive system is used to having to work harder than it would with the Chappie, just a theory but it makes sense to me!

If you want to feed yoghurt in future I would advise only giving natural probiotic/live yoghurts.

I have just come home from work and got some free samples again to mix up from just one flavour of JWB and I put half a measuring cup down and he has eatten it.
I think you could be onto something ajshep, with Chappie being easy to digest he hasnt been getting the goodness or making his digestive system work harder.
He has an appointment on Tuesday with the Vet, but on our walk today his stool was relevently normal.
